Hi , my partner has recently had  his SCT which everyone is happy  with , he was home from hospital after 2 weeks which was a great boost, he has needed 2 lots of platelets  and is back at hospital this week for a blood transfusion, he asures me  that according to medics this is an expected part of the procedure. He’s very tired and cold  so hopefully this should help. I know this is very early in recovery and we’re not expecting an overnight miracle but his pains don’t seem to be reducing any, can anyone advise if this is usual.

    Hello Les,

I am glad to hear your partner is recovering well from his SCT and blood and platelet transfusions are completely normal, my husband Phil had quite a few transfusions while he was in hospital for his SCT and a couple after he was sent home.

You don’t say what kind of pain your partner is experiencing? Everyone has a different journey but if it is a side effect from the transplant itself hopefully he will be feeling better in a few months. If it is bone pain from damage that the Myeloma caused this may never go away completely but will hopefully get better in time. Many people find the Zometa helps over time and for my husband Phil, although his back pain is not gone, it is much better than it was and he no longer takes any pain killers. Let your partner’s consultants know about the pain as they may be able to prescribe something to help and give you an indication of any improvement you can expect and when.

Hi Megan, thank you for your reply, it puts my mind at rest to know that platelets/ transfusions are quite normal, the pain he experiences is the same as before the transplant, in his hip , I was hoping that the transplant would eliminate all this . He’s been told he will be this way for  at least 2/3 months , I thought they were only talking about the tiredness but obviously they meant the pain as well, I am  a very optimistic person  but maybe  too much in this instance and was expecting a  miracle (haha), he takes things a day at a time but I want to know what, where & when  and how soon,  but I guess I’ll have to be more patient and let things take due course .Good to know your husband no longer needs pain killers. Thanks again

A day at a time is the best way during recovery from the transplant but then one day you will suddenly realise how much better everything is 🙂

    hi les,

My husband had his SCT in November, he too has a lot of pain in his hip, like  before SCT. He is back on morphine tablet at night to help him sleep. Just had his check up this friday and had xrays on hip. They think it’s bone damage but won’t know 100% till results are back. The tiredness and occassional sickness will continue for a while yet 🙁 and try to get him to rest when he needs it. This is the problem I’ve got lol. He thinks he should now be able to do everything and as fast as before MM took over. I too need to know EVERYTHING but he only wants to know little bits when it’s needed…too much and he can’t handle it. Anyway hope this helps a little and you all had a lovely Xmas day lol.

Great news Alan discharged from hospital where he had his SCT all tests show everything as it should be after SCT,main cancer cells zapped few slow growing ones theer but they will be closely monitored, back at the local hospital in a month for blood tests and possibly Zometa which I’m assumimg will now be part of his normal routine.Still awaitin specialist report re CT scan but they are still saying bnes look OK. Could possibly be arthritis (how strange to be glad it’s that) but that’s another story
All this only 5 weeks after SCT, this is so positive I hope this good news helps others who are on this journey.
    Great way to start 2014.
Happy New Year to all.. xx
