    Hi All,

Many of us patients take Velcade (the brand name), also known as Bortezomib (the clinical name). What you might not know is that certain flavanoids interact with it.

Flavanoids are in perfectly healthy food such as fruit and veg, but supplements can have highly concentrated amounts of them and this can reduce the effectiveness of the bortezomib.

    https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3860349/

‘Flavonoids in green tea block anti-cancer effect of bortezomib and other boronic acid-based proteasome inhibitors’.

‘Vitamin C inhibits anti-cancer effect of bortezomib’ (although, to be pedantic, vitamin C is not a flavanol).

There are various mentions of other flavanols too.

The studies are not always giving consistent results, and vitamin C is vital for human health.

However, as the impact depends on the dose, I suggest that flavonols and vitamin C should come from a healthy diet, not in huge doses from supplements. Green tea (especially green tea extract supplements) seems to be particularly problematic, and isn’t difficult to avoid.

    Regards
    Rabbit
