    Hello,

I wasn’t too sure where to add this query as it could probably fall into a couple of categories. Hope this is ok.

Brief Background: My dad was diagnosed in Jan 2022, received a SCT in Jan 2023 and went into “remission” in Feb 2023. Unfortunately, 18 months later, Sept last year, his myeloma became active again and he’s back on full treatment.

Whilst it’s been active he finds himself in hospital every few months with an infection of some kind – staph, sepsis, food poisoning, pneumonia. We can almost guarantee that he’ll have a stay at least once a quarter.

We’re assuming that this is occurring because my dad is a very active handy man (DIY, gardening) who has the inability to sit still. That inability to stay still sometimes worries me, my sister and my mum but he’s his own man and won’t listen to us nagging!

But I’m curious of other people’s experiences.

    Questions for the forum:
    1. Is it normal to experience several hospital stays whilst living/getting treatment for active myeloma?
    2. Is anyone else relevantly handy around the house but managed to stay out of hospital throughout their treatment? What’s your secret?!
    3. What advice have you been given by your doctors/consultants about carrying on with physical hobbies like DIY and gardening?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello lauror

I think the answer is that everyone is different, particularly with regard to treatment and how they respond to it. I don’t know if there is any specific advice that you are seeking, maybe thats a question for the ‘Ask the Nurse’ service.

I would say use common sense, listen to what your body is telling you, accept that you might not be able to do some of the things that you did before, or maybe not as quick anyway, but live your life as much as you can within those limitations.

    Regards, Tony
