My husband was diagnosed last April with kappa light chain myeloma, with no paraproteins, and full renal failure.  Initially kidney transplant & stem cell transport were discussed but these are not happening now. The nurse specialist told me it was because he had kidney failure he could not have SCT and because of the myeloma a kidney transplant will not be considered. My husband underwent 6 months chemo etc etc and now his kappa light chains are down to within an acceptable level.  The consultant told us he may have 12-18 months before further treatment is needed.  He is on dialysis 3 times a week and bloods are taken once a month for his myeloma.  We have consultant appointments every 3 months.  Unfortunately it seems no one took a blood sample for my husbands freelite test in January and Feb, so this was done earlier this week, so we don’t actually know the upto date results for this, which I believe are quite important?   Our consultant told me that he is not treating anyone else with myeloma and kidney failure – should I be (more) worried??  Anyone with klc myeloma and kidney failure who can enlighten me on the course of treatment given to them or which may be used in the future?  I thought that the Beta 2 result was a good indicator of the disease and also the staging category (re the information provided by Myeloma UK) but was told that our consultant doesn’t use these – should I press them for these?

You will find quite a lot of people on here with kidney failure. The free lite test is the most important in your case as it will give you the kappa and lambda free light chain numbers, especially has there has been no paraprotein. Even more important is the free light chain ratio. Ask for all of these results…sometimes takes a week for them to come back from lab. I always ask for a printout of my blood results so I can keep track. I have iga lambda but no kidney failure. I wouldn’t stress too much about not having a transplant as many people seem to stay in remission without it. In fact in the USA they are delaying transplant in some cases.
