Hello all. My mother in law was diagnosed with Light Myeloma last week. She was admitted to hospital the week before due to Atrial Fibrillation (unusual heart rate) and it was discovered that she had kidney failure and was down to 10% function. She was then moved to a renal unit as they thought they had hr heart issue under control.
After many tests it was discovered that the cause of the kidney failure and heart issues was Myeloma. She has had a bone marrow biopsy but I don't know what the results are of that. She has had an intensive four day cycle of chemo and steriod pills but this put some strain on her kidneys and has had to be put on dialysis and is no having that every other day.
Unfortunately, her heart issue is creating problems. She is on blood thinners and this is causing her dialysis site to leak as well as the bone marrow biopsy site. So they have taken her off the blood thinners and she is now having problems with the AF again. So it seems to be a delicate balancing act between the heart and kidneys and that is without taking the Myeloma into account!
She is suffering emotionally, which is unsurprising. She went in with palputations and all this has happened. She is also very tired because so much is going on both from an information and physical point of view. She was also hoping to be coming out at the end of this week but that is looking less likely and that has hit her hard.
On a positive note she has had funding approved for Velcade and shoul be starting that next weekbut having read a few things she may suffer with side effects during the first Velcade cycle due her kidneys.
So it has been a difficult 2 weeks and I'm sure the next few months are not going to be much better.
I have found some very useful information on this website.
