    Hi All,

Many MM patients have low neutrophils. As one such, I researched what I could do about it, and found this research on dark chocolate:

    https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5835384/

Although this is pretty convenient for a chocoholic like me, there is scientific logic behind it. It’s the flavanols in dark chocolate – the darker the better – that have a positive effect.

Do you know how long the effect lasts for?

    Hi blobgob,

A good question. According to Chat GPT, the boost to neutrophils is only for a matter of some hours, but that’s not too bad in the context of a daily dose (there is also of course scope to nibble the stuff over the course of a day). The bigger the dose, the longer and greater the effect (within reason).

There is also a boost to ‘activation’ of neutrophils, but the highest possible cocoa percentage that you can handle is recommended to keep sugar consumption down.

I use a chocolate that is 90% cocoa, not tasty but seems to keep my neutrophils level up. Cannot get it in supermarkets so have to resort to Amazon.

Sainsbury’s sell Lindt Excellence Supreme Dark which has a big label on the front saying 90% Cocoa.

I’ve got a bar but not tried it yet, am starting off with the Mint Intense bar!

I was told to get Bourneville so I get 2 bars a week. I needed no second asking as I prefer it to milk chocolate anyway.

Trouble is a never see much of it because my partner nicks it all.

I don’t know if it works for Myeloma but it works for me 🙂

    Hi Rabbit.

I hope you are as well as can be expected.

As I look at some of the posts on the various topic forums, your name seems to crop up on a regular basis and I just wanted to show a bit of appreciation and say ‘thanks’

I’m sure like me, you would ensure that whatever you say, has been researched and this is something that not everyone may be capable of doing.

    Keep it up!

    Hi Pedro16,

Thank you. I do post a lot on this forum, it is true!

I read a lot about myeloma, as a layperson but one with a lot of skin in the game and as someone with a background in science (not medicine). As a patient, I focus on treatments and anything else which can help (or hinder), rather than looking backwards into causes of myeloma.

There have always been a lot of con artists and scammers, especially when it comes to cancer treatments. Nowadays, there is also lots of online fake news.

In short, everything that I mention comes from:
    – Clinical papers, presentations etc
    – My own experience (always recognising that others may have different experiences)
    – Advice from my consultant which may
help others. He is a leading expert, and not all us patients have access to that level of expertise.
    – Occasionally info, advice etc from other forums. I try to include links to these.

In this case, you are posting on a discussion about neutrophils and dark
chocolate, and I put a link above to the source medical paper.

    Regards
    Rabbit
