Hi, I just wandered if anyone else’s hospital had started a new system in the way that the Paraproteins are measured.  I think my pp’s have gone up slightly, well the count has gone up from 6 to 11, but my consultant is going to wait for a couple of months because it could be a blip in the new system. I have been in very good partial remission for 8 years in March sine my sct in 2009.

What new system of Paraproteins measurement do you mean?

A new system of calculating paraprotein in the blood. My pp’s were 6, I had another  blood test 3 months later and they were 11, but typed underneath the reading was ”If the pp’s are above 5 after October 2016, then there could be a 20-30 per cent shown increase – My consultant wasn’t sure and neither am I

I wonder if it’s not so much a different method of measuring pp’s but more a different way of interpreting and reacting to changes in results. Just something to consider.

I know this thread is older, but thiught I’d respond anyway.

The message “If the pp’s are above 5 after October 2016, then there could be a 20-30 per cent shown increase” would be from the Haematology Laboratory. They’ve probably changed their analyser (machine) that they use to do the blood tests on. The other option is that they’ve changed their reagent which is the substance that they add to the blood sample before they put it in the analyser. Usually if this happens and it makes a difference to the results then there will also be a change in the laboratory normal ranges. In this case it looks like the lower and upper ranges might go up by 20-30% . Hope this helps.
