    Hi,

My husband had his SCT in January & will shortly start having his re-vaccination programme. I’m afraid I don’t have too much faith in the doctors as they don’t seem to know what’s going on, the hospital sent them a letter asking them to do the vaccines but we’ve had to phone them to remind them,so if anyone the experience of having said vaccines I’d be grateful for your input? Covid seems to be a bit of a problem as the doctors have previously said they don’t have any left & he’ll have to wait till they get another supply! I’d be very grateful if anyone who has had this experience could just advise me.

    Many thanks,
    Lynn

    Hi.
Sorry for late reply but just saw this. I’m in Scotland, Tayside so not sure if the system is different. GP had no involvement. This was back in October last year.
My consultant at the hospital got in touch with the vaccination programme….nhs/inform.
They sent an initial appointment at one of the vaccination clinics. I still had to travel as there isnt one where we live.
Once in this system it was good. The nurse in charge at the clinic lined up the appointments – there were quite a few! Some had to be rescheduled due to me being unwell etc. Apart from a sore arm the childhood vaccines, shingles, pneumonia etc caused no problems.
Covid was a bit more problematic. At the time I was on fortnightly maintenance and they would only do Covid and flu mid treatment. When I had actual Covid I was ill and also had a reaction to my first round of vaccines so they wanted to stick to the time frame.
Once I changed to monthly treatment that was easier and can now report my vaccines are up to date.
Hopefully all this is a waste of time and you have got something sorted out for your husband. I can appreciate it can feel it’s a real slog getting through all the appointments but you will get there.
    Take care..

    Hi again,

Unfortunately before my husband could start his vaccination programme he contracted Covid & is currently in hospital on oxygen & very poorly. He had tried to keep himself isolated but unfortunately caught it from a family member who didn’t know he had it. We had contacted our doctors twice but were told they didn’t have the vaccine so he didn’t get it in time. All I can say is please take any illness very seriously as it can cause serious problems especially after transplant you really need to be careful & if you do get poorly act quickly because things can change quite quickly he is 5 months post transplant & was due his last chemo treatment before starting his maintenance & everything has now stopped until he recovers.

Thank you for responding to my question & hopefully things will improve for us soon 🙏

We have had major issues with our GP practice full stop since ny DH was diagnosed at end of March. They are supposed to supply any none cancer meds eg pain relief, anti sickness etc. When DH came out of hospital we contacted the practice and were informed curtly, don’t know anything about it phone down!! Same response a call a few days later and it took a very snotty letter to the practice head honcho to get the prescriptions sorted. I am dreading getting them organised for vaccinations, after SCT. Every interaction with them is beyond painful, they are supposed to be monitoring my DH pain relief and we haven’t spoken to the GP since he came out of hospital apart from getting a sick note which despite his diagnosis they insisted on a telephone interview but never asked about his condition, pain or circumstances. Thank the lord the hospital performs much better.

    Hi,

It simply isn’t good enough though is it although I have to say our doctors are really great but on this occasion they have failed to take this seriously! I can’t understand why the hospital can’t carry out the vaccination programme they could do it when it was on the news headlines for Covid but apparently not now. All I’ll say is please take care & make sure you do get the Covid one as soon as you can because it is very much still about & the doctor said to my husband that unfortunately because of his non immunity it’s affected him like the original virus did he’s still so poorly despite all the medication anti viral, steroids, antibiotics & maybe if he’d managed to get the vaccine he wouldn’t be in this situation.

All the best & good luck with your SCT.
