Hello there everyone. My name is Fi and my dad has MM. He was diagnosed in 2012 and had his first Stem Cell Transplant in the Summer of 2013. He was 65 at the time and did really well. He was out of hospital in record time and had no set backs or infections. However light chains were detected in his routine check ups earlier on this year and he started treatment again last month with a planned second SCT in Feb next year. He is very fit and his consultant thinks he can go for number 2. The thing is he has just called me to say that when they have gone back over their records they see that they didn’t collect enough stem cells the first time round (this was in fact due to faulty equipment rather than my dads stem cells). Will they just go through the procedure again to see if they can collect enough for his second treatment or is it unlikely that he’ll be able to produce enough second time around? Any advice gratefully received as my dad is a bit despondent at present and I don’t think he’s clear what the future might hold.
Ask your dad’s consultant what they intend to do regarding harvesting stem cells. He can be given an injection to produce stem cells and if that fails they have a drug called pelixafor which can produce thousands of stem cells. My husband had problems producing stem cells until he had this and then produced 4000.
Thanks Maureen. I’ll get him to talk to his consultant. I think he was worried that second time around, after having undergone high dose chemotherapy, it might be harder for him to produce the much needed stem cells. It’s good to know there are drugs available.
Thank you for your time,
Fi x
