I just posted a query about travel insurance and it has disappeared ! I am wondering if others have managed to get travel insurance when declaring stage 3 myeloma ? I have just been rejected by Able 2 Travel which surprised me as it is one of the recommended companies….

My husband was diagnosed with myeloma in 2023. He is currently in remission. We got insurance with Insureandgo. We got a joint annual policy. It was expensive as we are planning a cruise in usa

Last year when I was in remission I got insurance with Puffin. I had to make a claim and they paid up promptly; the claim was not related to illness but to the global IT outage. This year Puffin will not insure me. I think it is because I answered ‘don’t know’ to the question about stage, because my consultant tells me that stage has no meaning with blood cancers.

    Hi Rosietheriveter,

The concept of stages in myeloma is quite well established, whatever your consultant says.

    For example, see: https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/myeloma/stages

It is true that stages are less important with many other cancers.

I’m not stage three, however It might be worth trying a broker, I considered this route after several hours calling various companies, however I was accepted by Insure & go, it was expensive for a single journey but not a much as I anticipated, and you can do most of it online then they will call you back.

    Adrian rambles-

When I first was told I had Myeloma the fear and dread was beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.
I have just pasted 9 years- now if somebody had said you’ll be fine 9 years after being told I would have probably not believed them.
Never reached remission, PP level run between 6-7.
Never changed treatment- still first line.
I feel lucky but also determined to see it out. If this post helps anybody in anyway, job done. I know at first these experiences helped me massively.

    Just noticed this post.
Travel Insurance is always going to be expensive with medical conditions sadly.
I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma back in 2013. After a period of remission it bounced back in 2019. This year I started new treatment on Elanatrab which touch wood has been successful in taking my paraprotiens back to undetectable.
I have taken annual travel insurance every year. If you travel at least 2/3 times it works out better value then single trip cover. It has always been to Europe and some years included Cruise cover. Apart from listing my medical history the biggest barrier has been age. As soon as you reach 70 then a buzzer seems to go off at insurance companies.
I am currently with Staysure insurance. I have previously used All Clear. There is also a new kid on the block that I found called “Insure with”.
They all tend to follow the same format and use the same screening forms fyi.
For cancer stage I have always ticked the don’t know box.

As an aside some of the Banks offer travel insurance as part of their account. Again you do have to complete medical declarations, but they are the same as the companies above.

    Trust this is helpful
