    Hello Everyone,

Can anyone recommend a UK travel insurance company who understands smouldering myeloma and prices their policies accordingly?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Regards,

    Robert

    Re travel insurance
I have had full blown Mm since diagnosis in May 2012. Despite having had chemo steroids and thalidomide, and a SCT I have managed to get excellent travel cover from nowicantravel.co.uk fora two week cruise to the Baltic, a month in the U.S. And a 6 week cruise from Hong Kong back to Southampton. Seems a very professional company whose medical agents were well versed in myeloma treatment who offered full repatriation cover with very low excesses. They had to in fairness as other companies we looked at were prohibitive Hope this helps. As an example the six week cruise was about £350 with a £200 excess

    Black Swan.

    Hi Robert.

We’ve just returned from a week in Greece and paid £67 to cover my wife and I, she has diabetes, and that was with nowicantravel too. We’ve used them successfully for our last  four or five trips.

    Hi Robert,

I have Myeloma and Amyloidosis, both in their early stages with no symptoms at present. Following initial treatment Oct – Dec 2013, I’m in complete remission and have had no fractures for over a year. In May I travelled to Italy for 5 days and got insurance with Staysure for £4.74 (staysure.co.uk) by excluding my conditions. I saw this as a small risk considering my individual circumstances; maybe you would choose to do the same considering your circumstances, e.g. smouldering, although you may have additional factors to consider.

    Have a lovely holiday.

    Hi Robert and Jan.

I would be very wary of excluding Myeloma from any travel insurance. Due it’s nature Myeloma COULD be linked to lots of illnesses and ANY broken bones. If you get an infection, maybe not so serious for smoulders, and need hospital treatment the insurance company could and probably say the Myeloma compromised you immune system and may refuse a payout. Likewise any broken bone would likely to be blamed on Myeloma I could go on but I think that gives you an idea. For me saving a few pounds isn’t worth the risk but everyone ones different.

Just a little story – a friend of mine was waiting to come at the airport in Tenerife and felt unwell they wouldn’t let him travel and he was taken to hospital. He thought the insurance was too expensive and ended up with a £40000 bill!!!

You pays ya money and takes ya choice.

    Hi Andy,

You have valid points. Any decision needs to be considered in light of individual circumstances.  I have always, even pre diagnosis, taken out travel insurance mainly with the thought of it protecting me against travel company issues including cancelled flights, lost baggage, etc. Insurance companies even try to wriggle out from these issues given half the chance!  I’m a taker of small risks. Unfortunately the risks will likely get greater over time if/when my conditions deteriorate. I just appreciate choice meanwhile, and staysure supported that.

I’m hoping to go skiing next year and will not exclude my conditions then. Skiing maybe sounds mad to some given the circumstances, but, you gotta live!

    Hi Jan.

Sking wow! I agree we all gotta live. When I see people sky diving for MyelomaUK it crosses my mind that would of been something I would of given ago unfortunately I’ve no chance now. My wife and I go on holidays as often as possible whilst we still can.

    Myeloma certainly concentrates the mind.

    Hi Everyone,

Many thanks to all those who have sent me their thoughts. I agree that it’s a matter of risk but as I am in the very early stages of smouldering Myeloma, may still do this however, I am conscious that insurance companies will always try to wriggle out of anything that they can.

I will most certainly take a look at nowicantravel.co.uk to see what they look like.

    Regards,

    Robert

    Hello Again,

Just been on the nowicantravel.co.uk web site where I was surprised to see they actually had “Smouldering Myeloma” listed in their pull down menu options, which is the first travel insurance web site to have this. They agreed to cover my wife and I to include my condition, for 2 weeks in the Canaries, for £43.72 so decided to take this.

    Thanks again for everyone’s feedback.

    Regards,

    Robert
