<p>Thanks, we are pleased we can manage at home. We can please ourselves when Bruce dialyses, but ideally they like us to do it while someone is at the renal unit at the hospital (between 7am and 9pm, Monday to Saturday). The NHS would like to get more people dialysing at home, it&#039;s cheaper! </p>

<p>Bruce had his stem cell transplant Oct 2011 (thanks again for all the support we received from friends on the forum). He was told he was in remission (or plateau) Jan 2012. The myeloma has spoilt his kidneys and he continues to have dialysis.</p>

<p>Bruce was 63 when he was diagnosed with Myeloma &#8211; he went into hospital as an emergency (Oct 2010),(kidneys were failing, but we didn&#039;t know that at the time). They put a line, first into his groin, then into his neck for dialysis. <p>Bruce had his &#039;line&#039; removed just after Christmas &#8211; his fistula (new plumbing for kidneys is working well). </p>

We&#039;ve missed the doctors rounds a couple of times because of going down to Mayflower for dialysis &#8211; but today we found out Bruce&#039;s neutrophils were 0.3 on Sunday (they were zero last Saturday)&#8230;..and today they are 0.9! 😀 😀 </p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi Tom, his temp is up and down like a yoyo. They are keeping a close eye on things, taking samples for cultures from his arm and his line &#8211; and keeping him well topped up with antibiotics. </p>
<p>He&#039;s hungry but can&#039;t keep hardly anything down. He had vegtable curry for dinner and really enjoyed it, then brought it all back up. </p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi Jo, yes he&#039;s missing his guitar BIG time. Skype is a wonderful thing &#8211; last night our frinds at the pub gave us a live show. Bruce joined in with the singing and it gave hime a much needed boost.</p>
<p>After dialysis yesterday they moved him from the isolation side room to the &#039;tank&#039;. One wall is a giant &#039;fan&#039; &#8211; another is glass. </p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi Dai, they are keeping a close eye on his fluids because of the dialysis side of things.</p>
<p>He says he doesn&#039;t feel too bad just yet, he&#039;s been quite sick a couple of times (they&#039;ve upped the anti sickness pills)&#8230;.and he has the dreaded poo&#039;s, but again not too bad just yet. 									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hi Bridget, he started being sick last night about 1 o&#039;clock. He ate his breakfast &#8211; then threw that up. Guess this is the bumpy bit. Dialysis tomorrow should be interesting, but at least he&#039;ll be in a side room. </p>
<p>I&#039;m staying in a B&amp;B about 10 mins away from the hospital &#8211; it&#039;s a 2 hour drive each way from home. He had dialysis on Monday, then melphalan on Tuesday (because of the renal failure, they gave him a half dose and no extra fluid &#8211; working on the theory that this would work the same as a full dose with 6 litres of fluid). <p>He has to be careful about his fluid intake because of &#039;hidden fluids&#039;. Dialysis removes excess fluid as well as cleaning the kidneys. He has to watch what he&#039;s eating as well as how much he drinks. <p>He&#039;s currently on his 6th cycle of chemo. He&#039;s taking thalidomide and dexamethasone. He&#039;s just had another bone marrow biopsy to show how the treatment is working. </p>
