Hi Gill
I can sympathise with you. I also had the worst Christmas ever. My husband Ian was told on Christmas Eve that he would need another operation (3rd since 29 October)to take out the pin in his spine as the wound was not healing quickly enough. I started crying on the morning of Christmas Eve and didn't stop until Christmas was over. This was our first Christmas apart and I took a photo into hospital of us on holiday in Croatia and Ian got very emotional as it was only 6 months ago and he had only a twinge in his back.
i do agree that noone understand what you are going through. My son had invited me for Christmas dinner so after visitng Ian I made my way there. Everyone was in good spirits and i found it so hard to sit there and hold in the tears. I was glad to escape to the kitchen to do the washing up and let my tears flow.
Fortunately Ian is improving and hopefully he will be able to walk and come home soon and have a long remission.
You are in my prayers and I hope you find comfort and peace.
Love Maureen x
Hi Dai
Thanks for your reply. Ian had only one cycle of CTD as he had the infection in his spinal wound and had to stop the chemo in order that the wound might heal. He did have a good response but was totally ga ga. Hopefully it was the infection and he will be ok on CTD this timeas as his anxiety has gone and we have now come to terms with the myeloma and staying positive.
He will have to have intense physio in a rehabilitation centre to give him a good chance of walking again but yes it will be good to have him home. He will get a day pass and then a weekend pass home before Easter.
Hope you are keeping well.
Maureen
Hi Eve
Ian is a little anxious to restart chemo as he had severe side effects from CDT. He will be in hospital as he isn't walking yet but we are hopefull that with good physiotherapy and rehabilitation he will have some mobility.
He is being moved to a hospital nearer our home but I will have to look out for him as he was an inpatient previously and they did not take a note of his fluid input and his feet and ankles were badly swollen.
Will keep you updated.
Maureen
Hi Jo
Thanks for your reply. Ian is a little anxious starting chemo again as he had severe side effects from CDT. Does he have to have strong doses of steroids?
He isn't walking yet so he will be in hospital but we are hopefull he will get some mobility when he receives physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Hope you are keeping well.
Maureen
Hi Keith
My husband will start taking Velcade on Wednesday. He is a little anxious as he could not tolerate the CDT. Hopefully he will not have severe side effects.
Maureen
Hi Dai
Thanks for your reply. Ian is a little anxious at staring chemo again as he could not tolerate CDT. He is not walking yet but hopefully it won't be too long until he goes for physiotherapy and rehabilitation. It will be nice when he comes home.

Hi Stewart
Venessa can contact me if she wishes. I too am struggling to come to terms with Ian's MM. The doctor has prescribed diazapan for me and I take it when I need it. It makes me feel calmer but I also believe that god will look after us. What age is Elsie?
I had a down day today, shopping in the supermarket, a nightmare. What do people buy as the shops are only closed one day.
Ian's wound is healing as he is eating better but we have to wait and see what his blood test showed regarding the myeloma. If it is still stable the velcade will be delayed a little longer to let the wound heal more.
I make hime home made soup and take it into the hospital, he also enjoyed a custard slice and he loves cheese.
We are taking each step at a time and I can't wait until he comes home, either in a wheel chair or walking. This is my second marriage and lthough we met 9 years ago, we have only been married for 4 years passed in May.
I don't work at the moment as I have a sick line from work, but usually I work 3 days a week and have been with the same compnay for 16 years so they are very sympathetic. One of the engineers is also a Hearts fan and he gets a lot of ribbing. Ian support Dunfermline for his sins but they are doing well so far.
Christmas will be a very hard time as we will be apart but I will visit him in the morning ton open our presents and he is allowed a glass of champagne.
Hope you keep well and have a good Christmas.
Maureen
Hi Stewart
My husband was daignosed in October at the age of 56 with MM. It has been a great shock to us. I cried continually for the fiorst 3 weeks. The doctors has given me vallium which I take when I need it. I stay strong when I visit my husband in hospital.
Do you live in Scotland as you are a hearts fan.
Maureen
Hi David
Ian is in better spirits and is eating better. His psinal wound is looking better and he is moveing his left leg and alos has movement in his left leg but his hands are weak.
I am thinking positively and we will try and have as nice a Christmas as possible. He is allowed a small glass of champagne. It will be very hard as this is our first Christmas apart but I am sure my granddaughters will keep me busy.
Have a nice Christmas and god bless.
Maureen
Hi Angie
Stumbled onto your message. We live in Dunblane and my husbnad Ian has been diagnosed with MM on 24 October. He had to have a spinal operation as his spine started to crumble when the steroids started attacking the tumour. He has had to return for further surgery to the Western General in Edinburgh as his wound is infected. He is slowly healing but he is immobile at the moment. Ian started a course of CDT but the side effects were awful. He is now on Velcade but this has been delayed to let his wound heal.
The plan is for Ian to be transferred back to Forth Valley hospital and restart his chemo and then go to Falkirk Royal for physio and rehabilitation.
I would appreciated any information you can give me regarding your husband's treatment.
Maureen
Hi Sue
I am still positive that there is light at the end of the tunnel. At the moment my husband is still in hospital as his psinal wound is still slowly healing. I am spending Christmas with my son, daugher in law and my 2 granddaughters. They have been a great support for me.
Have a nice Christmas in New Zealand and god bless
Maureen
My husand has partial paralysis as his spine started to crumble when the steroids started attacking the tumour. We do not know if this will be permanent but he was only diagnosed on 24 October and we have had to deal with the diagnosis plus a spinal operation. He had an infection in his wound and had to return for further surgery. We are now waiting for the wound to heal and I am travelling 40 miles each way each day but I miss him so much and keep praying for a miracle.
Hi Tim
Thanks for your reply. Ian has had a course of CDT which didn't agree with him but he was switched to velcade with steroids which seemed a lot better but the chemo has now been delayed to help his wound heal.
Did you have an issue with walking after your spinal operation? Ian will need physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Maureen
My husband was diagnosed with MM on 24 October after suffering with back pain since April. He has gone to the docotor on a few occasions and was referred to a specialist in July who advised him he was stiff and to have physiotherapy. He had physiotherpay for 13 weeks but he was still in pain. He then asked to be referred privately. The doctor sent him for an mri scan and they kept him in hospital. He had to have a spinal operation as the tumour was holding up his spine and when the steroids started attacking the tumour the spine was collapsing. He has lost the power in his right leg and his hands are very weak. He started on CDT but was verry anxious and depressed so he was changed to Velcade which agreed with him. He has had to have further surgery as the wound was infected. This was over 2 weeks ago but the wound is taking time to heal.
This has left us both very shocked that so much can happen in so little time. I miss him at home so much and pray that he can come through this. He is only 56 and was so fit and healthy.
