    Hi Robert,

It may seem a strange coincidence, but I was also diagnosed with multiple myeloma at the age of 62 and two years into retirement – as you say, quite a bombshell to receive the news. At the time of my diagnosis, my paraprotein was 74g/L and I was very weak physically, and there seemed to be quite a lot of hesitation as to whether I could be treated successfully. Fortunately my positive attitude and the fact that I had been very fit and active right up until the diagnosis persuaded the myeloma team to treat me. It is now six years on, and although I must admit it has been quite a tough ride at times, I am now enjoying my present life more than ever before and even taking on more challenges. I have found that the most important mental attitude to take is to take each day as it comes; do not look into the future, nor think back on where you were before, but just live in the moment and enjoy each and every day to the full. Good luck with your treatment.

    Best Regards

    David

It is now more than six years ago that I started my myeloma journey and I thought that a few words of encouragement might help those of you who are just starting out on your own journey. Although at times it must be said that the treatment has been quite tough, I have had a very full and enjoyable life throughout this period and never felt any negativity about my treatment or quality of life. I think we all realize that our form of cancer cannot in itself be “cured”, but it can be “managed” and for the luckier ones, like myself, for a long period. In fact for me, myeloma has come like a wake-up call and I currently feel more energized and alive and fitter than I have been for years. I have recently started cycling and even now feel fit enough to attempt a London to Brighton cycle ride later this month.

I am not looking for any more sponsorship, but if you are interested in my ride, you can find details at

I am happy to answer any questions about my treatment and condition, but obviously I can only talk about my own personal illness and experiences, which may be very different to your own diagnosis.

Good luck to all of you.
