Hello again folks.
Just wondered if there was anyone on here who had been treated in ARI?
Hi
Although I live much further north, in Dunnet Thurso, I was sent to ARI for my second SCT. No complaints at all, the staff were fantastic and the food wasn't bad either! I was able to take my laptop in with me and they even provided me with a Wii Sport to keep me active. The level of cleanliness and hygiene was excellent and the housekeeping team very thorough.
ARI is not the hospital I usually attend but Raigmore in Inverness is not able to cope with SCTs and I was given the choice of several hospitals for this, Aberdeen being the closest.
If there is anything you are not happy with you always have the choice to attend an alternative hospital.
Hope this helps, are you due to go to ARI for treatment?
Nettie
Dear Benz,
Hi – this is Eva. I live in north-east Scotland and I attend Raigmore as well as an oncology centre in London. I've also had treatment in Edinburgh in the past, but not in Aberdeen.
Best,
Eva

Yes! I've been treated at ARI since 2005. In fact this is the 6th anniversary of me leaving hospital after my first stem cell transplant! IO then had 2 years or so remission, then a second transplant(15 months or so remission, but I did go back to work part time teaching secondary in both remissions). Now I've had a year on Revlimid and am now on course 5 on Velcade. I've had lots of ups and downs along the way, but I feel that I get excellent treatment. The main issue is that I live 65 miles away from ARI so travelling is a major problem. With twice weekly trips 2 weeks out of 3, my specialist subject at the moment is "coffee shops of the A96!". There are very long waits at the clinic, too, and the pharmacy seems to rule the roost as far as getting medication is concerned. The record so far is 4 1/2 hours between prescription and delivery! Anyway, I would agree with what Eva said about being on the ward, and I have received good treatment (I'm still here anyway).
Appreciate the feedback folks. Good to hear good care up here.
TBH I feel a bit of a fraud asking so many questions on here and perhaps jumping the gun – but knowing what tests were for I felt obligated to understand a bit more about things locally.
However, I got the serum electrophoresis and Bence Jones protein results back. Both were fine and no further follow up from GP – who was once registrar Haematologist at ARI.
However, regardless of what happens in the future, before a couple of years back I never really considered anything other than being 100% healthy. This year has really shaken that and I now need to stop thinking "What if…." and focus on the important things in life – being my family and enjoying it each and every day.
Unfortunately Saturday was a bit of a write-off as was round at a friends on Friday evening and I must have drunk far too much wine….my lovely wife had to guide me home and I awoke at 0900hrs on Saturday morning not quite remembering how I got there. Not good! Not touched any since late May and don't intent doing any more in the near future!! Yeuch!!!
Coffee shops of the A96…..sounds worthy of a guide surely 😀
Yup, it was Morgan McVeighs today. On my 10 days' rest period now, so hopefully will get to stay at home…
Morgan McVeighs……know it well. Used to stay in Insch but now live at the other side of Bennachie. In fact my 6 year old daughter used to go to horse riding just over the hill which would be behind the A96 as you look out. It is a small world indeed.
I wish you well with your current treatment and hope all goes to plan.
I had never heard of MM until I was made aware of the type of tests I was having and google eventually took me here. I'm sure all would prefer circumstances to be slightly different but reading various posts and responses to my own questions has reinforced my belief that there are many, many good people around.
You take care and be careful on the A96 as you go to and from ARI.
Oh, slightly off the A96 but if you head into Inverurie, Fennel does a good cuppa and bacon roll if you fancied a change of a morning.
Scott
Yes, Fennel fills the spot after a weekend of rehydration and hospital food – the food at ARI is adequate but not too inspired. I've only been to Fennel for a full meal rather than a snack. It's handy when heading for the airport too.
