Hello
What more can life throw at us………….After 2 very unsettled days and 2 afternoons spent at the hospital Peter has today been diagnosed with chicken pox and a very nasty virus. He is quite poorly. Anti biotics and anti virals given, bed and rest the order of the day and a visit back to hospital on Friday.
The doctor said that he thought it is most likely that Peter's 2nd velcade cycle due to start on Friday will be postponed until he is better.

Hi Trish,
I am so sorry to hear that it is chicken pox plus a virus, no wonder Peter has felt so poorly. I hope the antibiotics and anti virals help Peter to start feeling better soon and then the 2nd cycle can get started. I know from our own experience that a delay in the cycle starting is not a problem as it is more important to be well than to carry on with the treatment no matter what. Phil had one cycle delayed and two others cut short, it does mean the end of treatment date you have in mind gets extended but you will get there.
I hope Peter feels better and that you avoid getting chicken pox!

Hello Megan
Thank you for your reply. Not much improvement yet today, sickness has kicked in now too!!!! Restless night for the pair of us.
How long do they delay the next cycle for.. is it the length of a cycle or start as soon as Peter is well?
The doctor did indicate yesterday that cycle 2 which should start Friday will be held back.
I have had chicken pox as a youngster, i did ask the doctor about me getting shingles, he said No.

Oh dear, sickness on top of everything else, how terrible:-(
Phil had his first cycle cut short as they were worried about the lesion on his right leg causing the leg to fracture. He missed his last two Velcade injections of cycle one as he was admitted to hospital to have the right leg pinned (Phil prefers the term nailed as he thinks it sounds better:-) ), after the first op they decided to keep him in to nail the left leg as well. The time in hospital and recovery when he got home meant the start of the second cycle was delayed by 16 days. Phil also missed the last Velcade of cycle three as he was in hospital with pneumonia. The last two doses of cycle six were reduced due to the neuropathy. Despite all of this delay and missed injections the dox-dex-Velcade treatment took Phil's pp numbers down from 32 at the start to 5 before the transplant. In Phil's case they started the treatment again as soon as he was well enough after the ops but they did not make up for any of the missed injections which may actually be a good thing as the missed injections could have made the neuropathy that much worse:-/
Hopefully Peter will be able to start up again as soon as he is over the chicken pox and virus, I think the delay will only be as long as it needs to be for Peter to be well enough for treatment.
I hope this helps,
Megan
Henry has just called me from work in a bit of a flap! apparently a lady in his team has just told him that her young son has been diagnosed with Chicken Pox. He has had chicken pox as a child but does anyone know if he can still get it or get shingles. He is not on any medication at the moment. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi Sarah and Henry
I can tell you I had them as a child, and got spots again when I was in my late 30s and told Dr my wife thinks its chicken pox ??? He said You should listen to your wife more as she is correct. But be grateful it's not shingles ? So the answer is yes.
Hope he stays well from it.

Hi sarah
Doctor confirmed this morning that if you have had chicken pox previously you can then get shingles. Hope Henry misses them.

Hello everyone
Well the chicken pox saga rolls on……Peter has been to hospital this morning and we have seen a different doctor who beleives that Peter does not have Chicken Pox, however he said that the spots are very like them. He thinks it could be a reaction to some of the drugs Peter is taking or even the Velcade. A blood test was taken to test for anti bodies to chicken pox…if none are present Peter will be given someone elses antibodies to prevent him getting the Pox or shingles. The mind boggles at technology.
Also after discussion it was agreed that Peter's 2nd cycle of Velcade is delayed until 2 weeks today. This will allow him time to recover from whatever the spots are, chest infection and a virus.

Hi Trish
Strangely enough I was at the Christie today & asked the question , had CDT / SCT taken away the immunity from childhood type diseases ! chickenpox etc
He said all the innoculations would have to be done again one year after my SCT& would be writing to my Doc re this point
Also the flue jab I had last Oct had also been wiped out
So post SCT be careful who you rub shoulders with !
All the best
Peter
Hi
Specialist nurse rang this morning to tell Peter that he has no antibodies to chicken pox so that confirms that Peter's spots are not chicken pox or shingles. Nurse stated that Peter must avoid chicken pox at all costs now as he is going through the Velcade treatment.
Doctor's appt for 5th April to discuss further and hopefully restart cycle 2 of velcade.
