It is now some 15 months since my SCT. I took a daily antibiotic for the first 12 months post SCT and that has now been stopped.
Since stopping I have had two coughs/colds and I noticed somebody mentioned them in a recent post. I feel perfectly fine and I would not say that there is anything unusual about them. I just wondered if they are to be a feature of my life from now on in.
Kindest regards ? vasbyte

Hi David,
There's a large part of me that wants to say yes, hopefully.;-)
Not that I'm wishing you ills but if you can cope with the usual, expected winter and summer coughs, colds and chills then it shows that your immune system is working as normally as it is possible to be normal with MM. If these ailments were making your neutrofils drop dramatically then you might have some reason for concern… but if they stay up and your body copes… then all well and good.:-)
Vasbyte and go with the day nurse.:-D
Dai.
Hi David
Well cough's and cold's :-/ I have to admite from having my SCT I have never coughed nor had as many poorly chest's that I can remember :-S and I used to smoke but am sure the gunge that built up in my lungs must have gone by now Lol 😉
But if all I suffer is the bloomin cough and the odd bad chest then am sure I will cope with that and it makes it easier for my young bride to find me as we walk around a market or shop as she can hear the "Cough Cough" Lol
Keep clear and keep good David 😀

Hi David,
Yes I think they could well be part of life. I had my SCT in July and have only really had 3 weeks since the beginning of December where I've been without any sort of illness (wish I'd been on the antibiotics you were on!!!)
Paracetamol and lemsip cold and flu are my lifeline these days!!! I keep them in business I think.
But perhaps Dai is right in saying it shows your body CAN fight them, even if not quite so quickly or effectively as before.
Good luck and I'm glad you're not feeling bad from the colds 🙂
Debs x
Thanks Guys and Gals, I would add that I am not complaining in the least.
My Consultant said basically the same thing i.e. "the good news is your body is fighting them" he also added that my general blood measurements were all in the normal range so not to worry and keep taking the Soluble Paracetamol when needed.
It certainly has not stopped me doing what I want to do, having just fitted my new integrated Fridge Freezer. I am always on the lookout for little things around the house that I can future proof and I noticed the toilet handle was a little slack so had a Plumber friend of mine take a look at it when he was around the house. When he dug into it he found the water pipe rusted through ? phew !!!! Amazing how one thing led to another?
Kindest regards ? vasbyte

"Onwards and Upwards" My Friend 😀
Hi all
I got a horrendous cold out of the blue a couple of days ago, copious amounts of snot! That is my third cold in 7 months post transplant. Is it becuase my immunity is building up again so like a child will just get everything that is going? Is my immune system forever compromised even in remission? I dont understand!! Can anyone throw any light on this?
Wendy
Hi Wendy
Yep when you get MM you are never the same but you look like your Immune system is fighting it so thats good, as for me mine has been a cough and chest infections by the bucket load :-S but I fight it so am happy 😎
Hope your soon better Wenday
Love

Dear Wendy,
I think that some people do get a pretty good immune system after a transplant. It might take up to a year. I think that might be why certain immunisations are with-held until the 12 month mark as the body can respond to them better then and mount an immune response that might be considered 'worthwhile.'Of course, it can be very individual.
I've just had my first really major flu since diagnosis in 2008 and transplant at the end of that year. Colds yes, but a real flu – the first one. However, when I think about it, even though my neutrophils have been lowered by the thalidomide down to 1.2 ( normal 2.0-7.0), practically everyone I know in this part of the world has had this flu/virus whatever it is. Finally I got it and then my husband. My neutrophils dropped to 0.7, which is entering dodgy territory. I had to stop my myeloma treatment and I'm waiting for my immunity to improve. I've also been on antibiotics. I was told that when someone has a bacterial infection, their neutrophils might be likely to rise, and when they have a virus, they are more likely to fall. Of course, viruses can cause some bacterial infections- that's why we get antibiotics, I guess. Sorry about your colds. I'm sure your consultant or doc will monitor your immunity. When immunity falls too low, a number of things can happen. You might have to go off a treatment for a short while, if your meds are suppressing the neutrophils. Or some people get IV immunoglobulin from their hospital if they've had a number of serious infections in a year.
Best,
Eva
Hi David. My thing is sore throats. Get them regularly but clear up after couple of days. Scared me the first time but when it went, like everyone else said, it proved my body can fight infection or viruses sooooo grateful. Glad u got your plumbing sorted 🙂 kay x
I must admit to being a tad over protective, even a little paranoid about picking up an infection while I am on this 3 Cycle 'probation' period with Rev & Dex. I will stay on anti-biotics for this period as a 'just in case' scenario but I want my bloods to be a true reflection of where I am with the treatment and don't want them clouded by infections and the like.>:-(
Get me going onwards and upwards with R&D and I'll take my chances… but until then I'm avoiding any place with a build up of people… which is why I am here right now while Janet is in ASDA.:-D
Dai.
Any excuse to get out of the shopping:-D 😀
