Admittedly this was about four weeks ago now and it was such a shock as he has always been fit and healthy individual and it was discovered after he went into renal failure. I just feel like its unfair as my mum has already had breast cancer twice and now my dad. We desperately need to find a cure for all cancers as it sucks and I have started fundraising for myeloma uk.  Everyone else is being positive but I am finding it hard as I know there is no cure at the moment. any tips?

    Hi

I agree it is an awful shock to be told you have cncer and true there is no cure at the moment, but as my consultant told me on diagnosis “If you have to get cancer this is one of the better ones as it is manageable.” I am just a relative newbie too, just moving towards my first stem cell transplant, but you will find many people on this forum who are living full lives many years into remission. How old is your dad and have they been able to reverse the kidney damage?

He is 70 so quite old I guess so I’m not sure whether he could go for stem cell transplant. Kidneys are improving now at 38% I think they were at 10% when he went in. Hopefully they continue to improve and get better.  That’s good that people go into remission I scared myself a bit by going on other websites. Not a good idea. He has never had any drugs for anything before so I’m hoping this will stand him in good stead.

Hey 70 is not that old any more…i am 64! A strong immune system is a help in fighting this disease according to recent Australian research. I believe that the less antibiotics etc you have had in the past should help. A lot of the information on the Internet is out of date and it seems that some (but not all of course) people live many years in remission with the new drugs. Unfortunately I was only 3 weeks off tne initial drugs when my paraprotein and lambda light chains started to rise. Read what is on this website and the Myeloma Beacon an American site.

Dad’s specialist said we have to stay away from American sites. Fortunately I guess we live near one of the top hospitals for research for blood cancers so that is good.  He is currently on velcade i think and steroids and millions of other tablets. Not quite sure how to make this easier for him.

Hi, almost the same as jeans husband I was 68+ when I had my stem cell transplant! last February. The only treatment I have now is a monthly penidronate infusion, visit the specialist every three months. So it can be done.
    Hope your dad stays strong.

    Hi there,

My tip is be positive, think positive and try to only read sites like this. The rest scare you. I know it’s hard to be positive sometimes as it can look bleak, however try to as it will make you and hopefully your dad feel better. Remember 70 is the new 60 🙂

    Good luck with the treatment.

Scared now as apparently this is a common area for that cancer and that if you are related it increases your chances of getting it. Not sure what to do any more

I don’t think they have found a strong genetic link, (although my dad died from leukaemia so I do wonder) but i do know of an Australian man and his mum who were diagnosed the same month!

Ask to have your blood tested so that you can remove that worry from your life and concentrate on your dad.

Hi Clover, i don’t think that there is a strong genetic link or so my sister and i were told but in time we will all know more, maybe there will be triggers that we can avoid, try to keep your immune system strong and stress levels down and enjoy your life please don’t dwell on it, i so hope that your Dad is doing ok at the moment, and hope that Christmas will be good, we must all enjoy our loved ones in the here and now, don’t let this illness steal the better times with your Dad, and he will feel better if you are coping, i have found strength that i never thought that i could muster and i am sure that you will too, talk to your close friends they will be there for you, love San xxx
