    Hi Everyone!

Hope you don't mind me posting here, been reading all your stories about SCT and found it really reassuring.

My dad has just been told that to cure his illness he needs a mini SCT he has just started the process to which his brother has been tested as a possible match, unfortunately his sister couldn't as she previously had cancer. We found out today that his brother unfortunately isn't a match which means he will have to go on a register to find a match.

Just wondering if anyone else has to go on the list and if so how long did it take to find a match?

Also we are in devon and if a match is found dad will have to have the procedure carried out at the royal Marlsdone is London did anyone else go here and was it okay.

Look forward to hearing from you all

    Take care. x

    Hi there,

As the others said dont worry about posting, this forum has been a godsend to us as we have made our way on the good ole myeloma journey.

I can tell you a little bit about the Royal Marsden. There are two parts but generally the transplants are done in the unit in Sutton in Surrey. It is a specialist cancer unit and has an excellent name.

The haematology – oncology is headed up by Prof Gareth Morgan, who is one of the top men in myeloma treatment and research these days. Your dad will get some of the best treatment available.

However if you live in Devon, I can see that it is a bit of a problem having to travel all that way. I know that the Royal Marsden do provide some accommodation for relatives when visiting.

Maybe you could explore the possibility of having treatment closer to home. I know of people from this forum who have had treatment in Plymouth, Taunton and Bristol, and I am sure that the R,D&E would do it too.

In the meantime, good luck with finding a match, I am afraid I dont know anything about that.

    Best wishes,

    Mari xx

    Hi everyone!

Thank you for your replies, looks like dad won't have to go to the royal marsden and it will be carried out at our local hospital in Plymouth. Heard quite good reports about this hospital so fingers crossed.

Our next biggest hurdle is trying to find a match for dad he has now been put on the Anthony Nolan register and my understanding that it has to be a tissue match unlike blood. As dad is hard Burmese apparently it is going to be slightly more difficult so we are just keeping our fingers crossed that there is someone out there.

    Hi Chloe
By meaning "mini SCT" and looking for a match I presume your dad is having what is called an Allo graph transplant.I am going forward for my allo graph within the next 6 months and an excellent match has been found for me.You should get an apt with the consultant heading the team to discuss the procedure and answer questions. My advice is to ask ask ask the more you know the better equipped you and your dad are.

you and your dad take care..Paul

    Hi Paul

Thanks for you reply, we have basically been told that dad has to have a mini SCT this is do with his age being over 60 he wouldn't be able to have the full sct. All we know is that he will go in for 2 weeks of chemo followed by 2 – 4 weeks for transplant.

Did you go onto the register then? if so how long was it before they found you a match?

Apparently it will be slightly more difficult for dad to find a match because he is half burmese and english why are things never straight forward!

    Take care Chloe

    Hi Chloe
My consultant began the process of looking for a match once we knew that this was the route i was to travel.I dont know how long it took really but it did not seem that long, sorry could not be more exact.
    take care Paul
