I wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction for any articles, advice or research on Myeloma and exercise. I am 68 and was reasonably fit before I was diagnosed, apart from some arthritis in the knees. I am now trying to get my life back together four months after a SCT and feel the time is right for an exercise regime. I have talked to a number of physios and mosthave never heard of Myeloma never mind what exercises would be helpful and what to avoid. James

Hi James, I am 69, just, and like you was very fit before diagnosis in July 2009. I had my one and only SCT in Nov/Dec 2010.

I am a bit of a keep fit guy and so I enquired with my Consultant what I could do and could not do. Gym work and weights was out as was running and in fact anything that put stress on my bones. It came down in the end to walking/swimming. So I set myself a measured 3 miles and started walking that every day. I normally do it in 51 mins. I had to pack up when the weather got too cold; I found sucking cold air into already damaged lungs was not a good idea. I intend to start again as soon as the temperature rises a bit.

    I hope this helps.

    Kindest regards ? Vasbyte

Hi David, Thanks for your comments. A really good point about not using weights. Today I have had a setback with my maintenance treatment as the consultants plan has been thrown out on cost grounds. I have talked more about this on the newcomers blog.

    Hi James

My husband was a fairly regular visitor to the gym but had to stop when he was 53 because of mm The trainers had never heard of mm and could only suggest a regime that people with heart problems follow. It was not at all suitable for Stephen as he has collapsed vertebrae

David is right but swimming was out for Stephen as to his shame he can only manage about 5 strokes (about 2 more than me)
Walking does seem to be the answer and we bought a dog. It was not a knee jerk re-action as we had always planned to have a dog when we retired and were home all day. Stephen becam too ill to work and so I took early retirement

Mind you we didn't plan on 2 dogs but when the first one was about 20 months old we got a second for our sins. We don't regret either of them. The are a constant joy and Stephen says when he is feeling unwell they get him out of bed in the morning. Probably that has something to do with both of them standing on their hind legs by his side of the bed and squealing until he gives them a couple of cherios each. Idiot husband keeps a little bowl of cherios on his bedside table:-S

I do hope your treatment gets sorted out

    Good luck Gill

Thanks Gill, for me walking is difficult a because of my knees, but thanks for your comments. James

    Hi James

Good to see you have got through SCT and now, working on you general health,Slim my husband has not yet had SCT but after a few hiccups with treatment, found himself unable to walk with out sticks then only a short distance.
He started walking short distances often with me pushing a wheelchair just in case, went to one stick, then none, took a long time, but managers to walk the dog now,as long as he does not have to stand still for to long.
I think you have to accept the limitations of Myeloma, and ask yourself are you ever going to be the same again??
Progress is far to slow for Slim, wants to run before he can walk!!,but if he had not had that attitude,!!!
I would say keep yourself busy, just doing normal things around the house,it amazing how much exercise you can get, just by
doing housework, and do not try in any form heavy lifting, the worse thing that could go wrong is having more bone damage.

So give your wife a rest and help with the house work, then lots of short walks in the lovely sun shine of Spain. love Eve
