My Husband, Stephen, died in September 2012 I don’t remember much about that Christmas. Stephen and I didn’t rate Christmas much after the children had grown up and left home. They visited some time over the holiday but M.I.L always expected the kids to spend Christmas with her and D.I.L. and I wanted to be on my own. I will be on my own (by choice) this year My daughter and family will be flying over from their home in the States and will stay with me in the run up to Christmas Eve then go to stay with the in-laws. I have been invited but politely refused and I have also been invited by my best friend, but she knew I would say thank you but no.

I will have a piece of steak with chips and a bottle of Cote du Rhone and a mini Christmas pudding. Stephen was not too fussed about Christmas Pudding but used to stack up on mince pies as soon as they hit the shops. He carried on eating them well into the New Year whether they were in date or not.

Surely this year should be a little easier?

One of the things I know is making it difficult is an advert on TV at the moment. Both Stephen and I were great Fans of Rod Stewart. When the children visited they always said that Stephen had brain washed them with Rod Stewart but they played everything they could find of his (including old LPs) and were word perfect as they pranced around to the music.

I am deviating. Back to the advert. I cannot even remember what this advert is for, but I have to switch over when it comes on. Rod Stewart is singing “Forever Young” and Stephen always maintained that it must have been written for us and our kids.

I think it may been written by Bob Dylan (Dai would have known Bless his Heart) Words below.

May the good Lord be with you down every road you roam.
And may sunshine and happiness surround you when you’re far from home.
And my you grow to be proud, dignified and true.
And do unto others as you’d have done to you.
    Be courageous and be brave.
And in my heart you’ll always stay

    Forever young. (Forever young)
    Forever young. (Forever young)

May good fortune be with you, may your guiding light be strong,
Build a stairway to heaven with a prince or a vagabond.
And may you never love in vain.
And in my heart you will remain

    Forever young. (Forever young)
    Forever young. (Forever young)
    Forever young. Forever young

And when you fin’lly fly away, I’ll be hoping that I served you well.
For all the wisdom of a lifetime, no one can ever tell.
But whatever road you choose, I’m right behind you win or lose,

    Forever young. (Forever young)
    Forever young. (Forever young)
    Forever young. Forever young
    For forever young

Hi Gill no what you mean about songs, I don’t know if its because were more aware, I keep hearings songs from the past which meant a lot to us both, they seem to be playing all the time or have they always been played and I took them for granted ( god I do ramble on sometimes, but I know what I mean)
Strange isn’t it I feel worse now than I did 9 months ago, I don’t cry as much but its the emptyness, I feel like half a person.
It good to hear from you take care

    Hi Gill

I’m so glad you have called in to see us. I do hope your plan for how to cope with Christmas works for you. You are the important one in all this. I am glad though, that there will be family around over the Christmas season. They will all be feeling a gap at the table too, as it were.

Do hope you and your best friend can spent some special time together.

    All blessings.
