It's nearly been a month since I had my mephalan infusion for my SCT.

I'm still getting daily bouts of nausea (after lunch and evening), not terrible by any means but enough for me to want to have a lie down (no vomiting). I'm wondering what other people's xperience of this has been, I've been home from my SCT for nearly a week now.

    Hi Tom

Are you on tablets for it????

Slim never came off anti sickness tablets, because as you know he relapsed 6 months down the line,it takes an awful long time for stomach and bowels to recover,Slim still takes medication for both at times.

Also Slim changed his tablets a number of times as some disagreed with him, your own doctor can sought that one out.

Early days young Tom,just enjoy being out of hospital.Love Eve

Hi eve thanks for the response, yes I have got anti nausea tablets but have been trying to wean myself off them. One of my doctors told me that your body can become reliant on them and 'make' you feel nauseous if you don't take them.

I did have some last night though after a few days of not taking them.

    Hi Tom,
I still had some nausea when I get home. During my current cycles of chemo- Velcade, Cyclophos, Dex, I was ok for the first four months and then the nausea hit like a tsunami. I suffered for several weeks and used all sorts of oral meds. Finally my husband who used to be a nurse reminded me that we had a supply of anti-nausea injections in our cupboard from the days when I used to get migraines. I had one injection given to me by my husband and immediately got four hours of relief. We then decided to book an appointment with our local GP to explain what we'd done and to ask if it was safe etc…
I was also concerned about cost to the NHS – if we were perhaps going to ask for more injections( some were past use-by date), would I be draining NHS funds terribly?
We found out each stemetil injection costs 50 pence, so that's not a problem. Administering them doesn't require a nurse – but a doctor might have to explain how to do it. It's easier than the growth factor ones we had to promote stem cells. I asked about frequency. We figured out there were three or four days a week when I was at my worst. My doctor said if I had one injection a day on those days it would not hurt me. I did this last week and it really did break some kind of cycle of suffering. I have no nausea for four hours – I eat better – when the nausea comes back it's much milder and responsive to oral meds. This week I've only had one injection so far – but I had it as soon as the nausea started. This had led to me eating much better and sleeping more restfully. We will re-evalute the situation every few days.
    Good luck,
    Eva

    Thanks Eva,
I think I can control it with the oral meds I was sent home with. Today I didn't have my normal post lunch nausea so here's hoping it's under control.

    Hi Tom

I felt queasy for a few weeks after my SCT and just to be on the safe side always had a sturdy plastic bag with me if I went out anywhere.
Just as well I did, after 6 weeks I suddenly felt sick when I was at a stately home. Fortunately I managed to get back to our car before my trusty plastic bag came in very useful!!!
After that day I was fine. 🙂

    Hi Tom
Well I was on the Anti sick Tabs for a few months after SCT consultant said I should do with out them but I insisted on the repeat prescriptions as it was me and not her that was suffering.

If you need them I say use them#

    Hi Tom,

Sorry to hear you are feeling sick. My Mum still felt sick a few months after SCT, she didnt help herself for a while by trying to wean herself off the anti sickness tablets. We came to the conclusion to carry on taking them for as long as necessary, no point in making yourself feel worse. There is also a whole menu of different types of anti sickness tablets, so if one is not working, ask for another.

    Hi Tom

I had very bad nausea and sickness for over 10 days during SCT. The consultant informed me that I couldn't go home until I was weaned off the many anti sickness tablets and could keep down fluids/solids. It was a slow process, but by the time I was released I could eat a few mouthfuls of food and drink some water. Because I had lost over 4 stone in weight since diagnosis due to sickness, I was referred to the dietician for guidance on food intake, who advised small meals, little and often with supplement drinks until my diet went back to normal.

When I got home, the sickness continued when I tried to eat a heavy meal. It was much better if I snacked or just ate light meals of cheese/tuna or egg on toast, yogurt, custard, etc. I used the supplement drinks for a couple of months. After SCT, I needed a good 14 hours sleep a night. I learnt that if I tried to get up too early in the mornings without adequate rest, then I was sick. If I rushed around after breakfast trying to get dressed or go to an early hospital appointment, then I was sick. I had to rest after food for a good half an hour, otherwise I would vomit. It took a good 18 months before I lost the feeling of nausea or sickness, but because it was occasional rather than every day, I tried to avoid the anti sickness tablets. I learnt to carry around a sickness bowl in the car and in my bag for the odd occasions when I needed to be sick.

I was never offered anti sickness tablets after SCT because my consultant felt they were not necessary. I believed I did not need the tablets and tried to cope as best as possible. I wish now that I had asked for a supply after SCT – if you need the anti sickness tablets then take them until you feel better. It's taken three years to regain my weight and now I need to watch what I eat again otherwise non of my clothes will fit me!

I want to thank eveyone's collective wisdom and experience. It's reassuring to see we have had similar experiences.
I have got anti nausea tablets but will use them only if I really need them. Let's see how I get on. I will report back.

    Many thanks all
