My lovely Mum has just had a stem cell transplant at the UCLH and was able to come home this week. She received the treatment well and did not have any major issues with side effects apart from the ones generally mentioned. She is now home and feeling well. I know that some people have mentioned being vulnerable to infections and I just wondered what steps we need to take. Obviously we will keep our distance from her and no one with any sniffles to visit but when will she be able to go out and socialise and be with people etc. we aren’t sure when we can try and get back to some kind of normality

    Good afternoon Cheshk
How long was your lovely mum in hospital.?, bear in mind everybody is different, and I had to be 100 days before I had bone marrow biopsy and have it checked to see how bloods have gone…nobody came to our home with anything that could harm me ….so good luck with mum….
Onwards and upwards it is ….

I’m glad your mum is doing so well. I would have expected her medical team to advise her on how long to isolate and what to do and not to do after a stem cell transplant. I’m going to have one next year but I haven’t had my meeting with the haematology team yet but I’m hoping they’ll give me some written guidance. My friend has just had a transplant with the same team and was told to isolate for 100 days once discharged from hospital. But after that she had 2 more months of chemo, then she has to have all her childhood vaccines again so still more vulnerable than before the transplant. The 100 days seems to be a general thing from what I’ve read online. But your mum’s team should be able to advise. They will be doing regular blood tests so should know what her immune system is doing.
