Hi my dad was recently diagnosed with MM in feb 2019. He has just finished his transplant. His blood stats are picking up thank god and so is his form. His hair is thinning a bit but a bit worried will it all go? His appetite is slowly coming back. How did ye all feel after the transplant? Was it a while before things got back to normal. We are just hoping now we can have a break for a bit after all this and he will be in remission for a while. Does this just all depend on luck.. Thanks guys for any feedback or info ye have. Love lily

    Hello Lilly,

I have had 2 SCTs now (diagnosed in 2006) and after each one had about 5 years remission. I didn’t have much hair in the first place but remember most of it going and not having to shave for a while. Everyone is different and even though I had the same treatment twice one was ok but the next was not quite as good. I Remember starting to feel better a few weeks after finishing treatment but took a little longer to totally get over it. Wil finish 2 years of treatment and maintenance in November and intend to be feeling ok by Christmas. I think each Consultant has their own thoughts on treatment looking at each person individually to see which treatment would be best for them.
    Best wishes
    Kevin

    Hi lily
I had aSCT in Feb. I was lucky enough to have only minor ill effects & although I was readmitted to hospital I wasn’t really poorly.
I needed to spend a few weeks recouperating but by day 37 felt a lot better. Later I was told that blood tests on day 37 revealed that I’d had a Complete Response. This is a lot sooner than most people so maybe I recovered from the procedure quicker too.
I think the key things are to do some physical exercise in moderation and to eat a healthy diet and beyond this to try to get back to a part time normal life. I hope your father is soon feeling himself again , and all the better for not having to spend so much time and energy on treatment.

    hi Kevin
Thanks for your feedback. I was busy the last few days visiting dad after his SCT. He is due out this week hopefully once his temp stays ok. Mouth is very dry no saliva so the eating is slow. Things can only get better please god. The first few weeks were tough. Great to hear your positive news…

    Hi Lily,

I too have had two STCs and was first diagnosed in 2006 and was in remission for about five years after each. I found recovery back to an active lifestyle difficult. Initially I had the common post STC symptoms like hair loss, exhaustion, dry mouth, blood clotting, lack of appetite. It took me about 6 months to get back to a good level of health and fitness but I never got back to my previous levels. I would say about 25% less than before each STC. I was very fit and active and try to keep this up but at a much reduced level than before. All I can say is that a healthy diet and a level of exercise that you can cope with seems to help….but we are all different.
