Hi My partner has Myeloma and CLL and is currently undergoing his second course of treatment for the former. I have been working from home since the pandemic began but now am being told I need to return to work for part of the week. I work at a university which is a high risk environment with so many people including students and academics travelling from all over the UK and from abroad. I am extremely disappointed that my employer has not agreed that I can continue to work from home as it is clearly possible for me to do my job remotely. I am extremely concerned about returning to work and also need to travel in on public transport which is another concern. My partner is prone to episodes of passing out and needs quite a bit of support at home such as getting food and drinks and helping him with medication. As well as the concern regarding the risk to my partners health my own health is suffering as I am so worried. Any help or advice would be very welcome. Thanks.

    Hi Lizb,

I understand completely how you feel, there really is a constant worry when looking after someone with MM isn’t there? Could I suggest you talk to one of the specialist nurses, perhaps book a call in with one of the nurses on this website, just to see if they have any advice that would be useful. Or, alternatively, if you have an HR Department in the University perhaps you could talk with them as they might back you up and offer support in talking to your Manager. I don’t know if either option is feasible, but it just struck me what a difficult situation you are in. We were lucky in that we own our own business and my son and daughter-in-law were already actively involved in taking over, allowing me to retire. So when my husband was diagnosed and needed support I was able to stay at home with him, keeping him safe from viruses and bugs. Hopefully you get some help and you can follow your heart in looking after your husband as you’d like to. Big hugs to you, Marion xx

    Hi Liz
It may be useful for you to seek specialist employment advice from the Myeloma UK ask the nurse team, or better still from Macmillan who have real expertise in the area of employment rights.
If course you want to continue to support your husband, and to continue to shield him by avoiding viruses yourself.
It’s very disappointing when employers fail to support their staff dealing with stressful family circumstances.

Thanks so much Marion. I will try the specialist nurses. Unfortunately HR have not been helpful. I’m glad you have been able to retire and support your husband. Sending hugs back to you xx

Thanks so much Mulberry. I will follow up your suggestions. I didn’t know Macmillian were particularly good regarding employment rights. It is really disappointing, especially as I have worked from home since the pandemic began with no issues. I think many people think the risks have gone but that 8s of course not the case amy at all. Thanks so much for your helpful comments They are much appreciated xx
