    Hi Bridget

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was so sorry to hear your news. I hope you are better now after the chest infection. Hopefully the radiotherapy will do its job and you will be in less pain. It worked very well for my mum.

I've got my fingers (and everything else) crossed for you and hope 2011 will be a good year. As others have said, you give so much support, encouragement and words of wisdom to everyone else and now its our turn.

When are they starting the radiotherapy? Are you having it at UCH?

Despite everything, I hope you had a good christmas and are enjoying some peace and quiet now the grandchildren have gone home.

    Take care of yourself

    Hi Gill

I'm so so sorry to hear it has come back. I know it is a real shock when you relapse. My mum relapsed in August 10 (after her SCT in September 09) and I remember revisiting all those feelings of when she was first diagnosed including fear, anger etc. She has been on velcade since August and has had a good response. She is now only having the velcade once a week and luckily has had very few side effects. So apart from going to the hospital once a week, her life has pretty much returned to normal.

Do you know yet what treatment they are planning?

As other people have said, there are lots of treatments out there and the outlook for myeloma patients is so much better than it was a few years ago. Who knows what developments will happen in the next few years. My little ones are aged 6 months and 2 and a half and I'm planning on my mum being around for many years to come to see them grow up.

Keep positive and take care of yourselves

    Lots of love

    Hi Arlene

It is my mum who has myeloma. She was diagnosed in January 2009 at the age of 65. After her first cycle of chemo she became neutropenic and got an infection. She was very poorly and was in ITU with acute renal failure. Luckily she made a good recovery. After more chemo, she had her SCT in September 2009 and actually sailed through it. She stayed in the hotel for most of the time and only went into hospital for a few days but remained very well and fully self caring throughout. She had a good response and her paraproteins were too faint to quantify. Unfortunately the myeloma returned in July 2010 and she is now on velcade. Some people remain in remission for much longer, you just never know. She is doing well on velcade and has returned to doing almost everything she enjoys doing.

Like you, we were very worried about having the SCT due to the risks but she did very well and I guess its weighing up the risks against the hope of having a long remission.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
    Take care

    Hi Bridget

Thanks for the info. My mum is on pamidronate. She was on zometa when first diagnosed but this was changed to bonefos when she had acute renal failure (she fully recovered). She wasn't on anything after her SCT but the myeloma has recently returned and she has been put on pamidronate. I did ask about zometa as I had seen the recent study on its benefit. They said if we felt strongly, they would change to zometa but reasons for not are kidneys (they think pamidronate is better if you have had previous kidney problems) and risk of problems with the jaw.

My mum is being treated at UCH and I think you probably see her in the velcade room on Wednesdays!

    Hooe you are well.

    Take care

    Hi Bridget

I saw on your post that you were originally on pamidronate but have recently changed to Zometa. Can I ask why you've chamged?

    Many thanks
    Georgina
