    Hi Gill
I'm so sorry that you have lost your husband Stephen. No words can help to ease your pain. I saw this quote today and thought of you both x ?What one carries deep in his heart cannot be lost by death" I know he is not here with you anymore but he will always be in your heart and nobody can take that away from you.
    Lots of love

    Hi Newbie
My name is Rachael and its my mum who has mm. My mum is having velcade as a first treatment as she is 72 there is no talk of sct so its just going to be managed through the drug route. The first cycle of mums velcade (subcut) was the hardest she suffered with really bad sickness and no appetite and a funny taste in her mouth. Since then she has been really well with it, I think because she had bad kidney function at the beginning that was what was making her so sick. As the velcade is now working she has her appetite back and the funny taste went away after the first cycle. Mum has just finished cycle 4 and has two cycles left, her paraprotein levels have dropped to 7 already and her kidneys have gone back to normal range (when admitted she was in kidney failure, 20% function apparantly) The velcade/dex is really improving everything and apart from needing an afternoon nap my mum is coping very well infact everything feels quite normal at the moment they have even gone away this week (the consultant said they didn't have to cancel their holiday and put back mums 4th cycle by a week)I hope this helps and answers a few questions for you and I hope your dad copes aswell with the velcade/dex as my mum has.
    Lots of love
    Rachael

    Hi Kerrie
Just wanted to let you know, my mum is 72 and was diagnosed in May this year, the first 5-6 weeks were the worst then things have got alot better. My mum is on velcade and dex and is just on her 3rd cycle, she was quite poorly on the 1st cycle but her kidneys were quite bad and I think this is why, since then she has come on in leaps and bounds and although gets quite exhausted the sickness etc has gone. Her paraprotein levels have come down to 7 from 28 and she is not even half way through so it seems the velcade is doing a good job! My mum has it by subcutaneous injection in tummy every friday for 4 weeks then 1 week off. Hope this helps now your mum is going to be having velcade to know that my mum has been okay with it.
    Love Rachael x

Hi Dee, my mum is tired quite alot too, they have to listen to their bodies and go and lie down when it tells them too. My mum is doing really well Dee which was hard to imagine in the beginning I hope it will give you some hope x Her kidneys were only functioning at 20% I think when she was admitted and have now just gone back into the normal range which is fantastic as they were unsure they would get back to that. I think my mum was more ill with the first cycle of Velcade because of her kidneys, she was readmitted on week 3 of first cycle with temp and terrible sickness she had to have iv paracetamol and sickness drugs and then a blood transfusion. Now though Dee she has just started her 3rd Cycle of velcade and is a different person, it doesn't effect her as much and she has been out and about with my dad and hasn't suffered no where near as many side effects. Her paraprotein levels have really dropped too so its looking very positive at the moment. I really hope this may help you, I know its very individual and can change all the time but I wouldn't have imagined this much improvement when she was in the first month as it was a very scarey time and I had never seen her so ill. I really hope your dad starts to improve Dee, lots of love and if you ever need someone to talk to I'm always around x xx x x xxxx

    Hi Dee
My mum is having velcade on its own once a week injected subcutaneously, she does 4 weeks on then 1 week off, this is classed as one cycle. She has been told she will have 6 cycles so that will be about 7 months altogether. I hope this helps and you are okay and staying strong x x Love Rachael x

Aah Alison I just got tears in my eyes reading your post x I do feel that its all I talk about with my mum and dad and am trying to make a conscious effort to talk about other stuff.Hopefully over time (its only been 4 weeks) we will get back to normal. This whole business has made me feel that we cannot take anyone for granted as I really thought my parents were indestructable and would always be here,Ive always been close to my mum and as I told her last week I am her friend aswell as her daughter and as I'm nearly 40 years old she can lean on me if she needs to! I too am going to make the most of my parents as like you it gives us a chance to show how much we really mean to each other. Lots of Love Rachael x x x

Hi Liz, thank you for responding. I think this group is fantastic and I hope you will be able to get some answers to your concerns on here x We are only half an hour from Addenbrookes which is really helpful are you local to the Hospital? I hope your STC went well and you are doing well from it. My mum goes onto E10 for her Velcade injections and was on C10 for the night last week with temperature etc they seem very organised and all the departments seem to communicate well. My mum has got a personal nurse she can ring if she has concerns I hope you have too. Speak soon keep in touch Love Rachael x
