Hi Annika, you have certainly done the right thing coming to this site, there are so many people to chat to, and get support from. My husband was not half as bad as we expected on his first line of treatment. He is younger that your husband(55), but he tolerated the treatment very well. The steroids made him very grumpy, and shakey, but thats a small price to pay!! Hopefully your husband will continue to do well. I don't think cancer treatments are as bad as they used to be, and the Doctors are more aware of the patients well being. My husband has had myeloma for 2 years now, and the only thing that affects him is fatigue, which we have learned to work around. Of course it will come back, but there are more treatments available, so I try not to worry too much. Years ago cancer used to be a death sentence, but remember, people live with myeloma for years, so try to stay positive! xxxx

    hello annika

I had cdt treatment I was 61 I tolerated it pretty well except the emotional bits with the hated DEX I have had MM for 2.5 years now or that was when it was diagnosed I am sure I had it for quite a bit before that there are people in my clinic about your husbands age who are doing very well on the medication so hopefully he will be fine

    Regards Jo 😎

    Welcome (?) Anne

Just go with the flow Anne, one day at a time, and make sure you both enjoy that day. I am nearer your Husbands (Name?) age at 68. I was diagnosed in July 2009, with a major tumour in my neck. I have worked out, from various symptoms, I have had Myeloma since 2007. I have had a Stem Cell Transplant.

Watch out for the "Dex" it can give terrible mood swings in some, I never had them but some people have reported hubbies/wives turning into some kind of monster!!! (My wife said she did not notice any difference in me – was she trying to tell me something I wonder >:-) )

    Kindest regards ? Vasbyte

    Hi Anne,

Is your husband on CDT (Cyclophosphamide – Dexamethasone – Thalidomide) or a similar cocktail? CDT seems to be the current frontline of attack. I did well on CDT but the much vaunted SCT was a failure after only 10 months.

I am back on Velcade now (with the dreaded Dex) and will complete my first cycle today (and then a week off – stretched a day by the May Bank Holiday). So far, so good after a blip following infusion no.2 where dex kicked in properly (but a relatively large secondary tumour subsided at the same time which is more likely why I felt awful – the meds were doing their job… and I was blaming poor innocent Dex – bless). 🙂

At 77 your husband will be beyond the stem cell transplant routes but that may not be too bad a thing, I have met quite a few people who respond and get along with this wonderful new generation of drugs that have transformed MM over the past 3 years or so.

They are my hope and they will do for me.

Take care of each other, aim for 80 (I'm 57 and aiming for 60) and take it from there.

    Of course we can.
