Dads Kappa increased to 10>30, and Lambda 7>19, so ratio still normal at 1.57.

Cant seem to find much info online on if its of any importance. Anyone know?

    Hi Sachbarnes
I believe it’s only the ratio that is of real significance.
Since my SCT 3 1/2 years ago my kappa levels have been outside normal limits (high) despite me having lambda myeloma. My consultant has said that this is, if anything, a positive thing. The ratio is within normal range.
Even if we are in a stable position disease wise, or if no myeloma is evident, our bone marrow remains ‘abnormal’ so perhaps that is the explanation.

The significance of an increased light chain in the presence of a normal ratio depends on clinical context. While a normal ratio suggests a balanced production of light chains, an increase in one type could indicate a specific pathology. Consultation with a healthcare professional is advised for proper interpretation and diagnosis. Yes, an increase in light chains can still be significant even if the ratio is normal. Light chains are proteins produced by plasma cells, and their levels can indicate various health conditions. A normal ratio suggests a balanced production, but elevated light chain levels might still signal underlying issues such as kidney dysfunction, infections, or early stages of plasma cell disorders like multiple myeloma. It’s crucial to consider the absolute levels and clinical context rather than relying solely on the ratio. Consulting a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation is essential to understand the implications of increased light chains.
