    Hi everyone,

My poor dad is in his 3rd week of CRD and has terrible hiccups for a hours at a time – with everything he's going through, the thing that really seems to bring him down is these damn hiccups!

He's been told its not uncommon with the Dex – he's tried all the usual tricks of getting rid of them, but nothing really seems to work. Has anyone else experienced this / does anyone have any thoughts?

It seems like the most ridiculous thing to be asking about, but I can't believe how much it brings him down – he's so incredibly positive most of the time, but he ends up embarressed and not wanting to see or talk to people when he's hiccupping!

    Thanks all 🙂

    Hi Steph

Yes the horrible hiccups sp loud some times people turn round!!! Slim has them, not all the time but when on treatment,as he is now,it's been 5 days since the Dex and he is still hiccuping away!!! I just tell people it's because of the Chemo treatment,if they do not like it,so what!!!!

I think Patients have nough to be going on with without worrying how other people react to a person with hiccups,as for not wanting to see people and talk to people because he is embarrassed:-P tell him not to be!! Or make a joke of it,too much Chemo just taste lie beer!!:-P

I can tell you after 2 1/2 years,it's no different than any other sound, and lets face it,there are lots more things with Myeloma that will worry your Dad anxiety is a big one!!! ,so may be that's what the worry is!!! Eve

    Hi Steph,

I am knew to the Chemo and have just started my second cycle of CDT. I too found that the Dex gives me hiccups on the two 4 day stints that I am taking on my 21 day cycle.

It makes me a bit 'hyper' and ramble a lot. I'm not sure if that's one of the reasons that I get the hiccups. it was quite bad at first (every day) however this last stint of Dex ( finished 1st lot of two for this cycle yesterday) as not been as bad.

Good advice on the Anti Sickness pills though from Dave. I'm going to try that next time. I was prescribed Domperidome (hope that's how you spell it) I only know it reminds me of the the Champagne (wish I could have that instead)! from the Hospital (MRI). however I have hardly took it because I have not needed it. I have only taken it the day before I have my Cyclo on days 1, 8 & 15. otherwise luckily I have not needed it. But as Dave said if it works then it's worth a bash.

Hope your Dad improves soon and thanks Dave for the tip!

    Kind Regards

    Scott 🙂

    Thanks for the replies everyone – its a huge help when I can say to him;

"I know its horrible and frustrating, BUT you aren't alone and this does happen to others…"

Thanks for the tip Dave, I'll pass that one on. We're meeting his consultant on Monday (postponed from yesterday because Dad has a poorly tummy 🙁 ), so I'll bring it up with him.

Scott, hopefully Dad's future cycles might not be so bad, as in your case. I did smile at your champagne reference – you'll have to ask if that can be prescribed too!

    Thanks 😀

    Hi Steph

I asked at the hospital this morning as we have been going for 2 1/2 years, and the young doctor said there is an anti sickness drug that has been found to stop the hiccups, she said she would look it up for me for Monday,Slim was hiccuping all morning in clinic ,so thanks to Dave I might have a more peaceful time. I was diagnosed with MM a few weeks ago and started my first 28 day CTD cycle a week ago. Within 24 hours I started hicupping and continued for 5 days non stop! I saw my consultant on Friday (when they had temporarily stopped) and he has told me to lay off the steroids for the rest of this cycle. Unfortunately I'm still getting them sporadically so will have to see how things are by Monday. Good to know I'm not alone with this.

    Hi steph

My Colin had hiccups bad too, we used to try everything….warm water and sugar, holding breath, etc….the best we could come up with was blowing into a paper bag. He really was distressing for him so we do understand how your dads feeling. Also when taking the tablets maybe he should try to reduce how much air he is taking in…..

    Hi Steph

Well I spoke to the doctor on Monday again,it is only one particular anti sickness pill that has been found to stop hiccups, she said, she had not had time to find it,but recommended I see GP who could prescribe it,I might pop to my chemist as the pharmacy is very good at finding things that help.Eve

Hi Eve,in hospital I started hiccuping during treatment and after 2 hrs a Dr came and gave me CHLORPROMAZINE 25mg tablets (says on packet to take 1 tablet 3 times a day when required – can make you sleepy/no alcohol). I only had 1 tablet and it did the trick. This is what the standard treatment for hiccups is at my hospital.

    Hi Rebecca

Thank you for the name, just about to order Slims pills from GP so that has come in handy,to think I have put up with it for over 2 years, plus poor Slim found it embarrassing if he was out.I will also give it to that young doctor next time I see her. Thanks again Eve

    Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for the tip – I'll ask about it at the hospital later.

On the weekend, I spoke to my mother in law who is a nurse. She says that many years ago, when she worked at Harley Street with heart surgery patients (hiccups is apparently a common side effect of heart surgery!), they used milk with a pinch of black pepper for patients with hiccups – that must be worth a try 😀

I find I only get hiccups after take Cylophosphomide, never had them with Dex despite being prescribed it since March. If you think Hiccups are bad I suffer from flatulance, anytime anyplace. I don't even know it's coming. The nurse tells me it is a side effect of the drugs but I don't know which one. I just have to stand still if I sense something happening and hope no one hears.
