Hi all, I am, I think, recovering well at home now, discharge date 15th Dec. Taste buds have still not returned and everything taste foul (and I am being polite here). I had my first dinner for over 3 weeks yesterday (tea plate trick). But generally I feel as I expected to feel if you know what I mean.
I have been trying to find out whether I need to get another/boost swine flu jab. I had one on the 13th November before I went into hospital. My Doctor does not know and I have resorted to emailing my consultant! Anyone know the answer?
Kindest regards and a Merry Christmas
David
Hi David
I am glad you are OK you maybe feeling like S**t but you will be amazed at how it starts to turn around. I really wish that I had kept a diary when Stephen went through all this first time round. Just a sentance every day would have been a good indicator of improvement.
I cannot help over whether you should have a booster. I suppose the question is if the vaccine is still in your system or whether it has been eradicated. I suppose you could get round it by banning all visitors and becoming a hermit until your numbers improve>:-)
Good luck Gillxx
Hi David,
Sorry to hear that everything is normal.:-D
I think the best thing is to ask your GP if there is any risk about having it twice… dependent on your consultant's reply that is.
I was pretty neurotic for the first three or four months but I started to feel less so after my hair was back and I felt Ok about going to crowded places like ASDA and Morrisons etc., (other supermarkets apply).:-)
It truly is amazing how much a few days make, let alone a week or a month etc., so I hope that your buds are back enough for you to enjoy at least some of the Xmas fayre.
Regards
Dai.
Hi David!
My husband was due for his annual jab the week I came out after my STC so we asked my consultant about whether I should get one too.
She said I should not have one at this stage but to be alert for any sign of getting the flu or a temperature and contact the ward if it happened.
Dear David,
It's disputable whether immunity survives properly after an ASCT. An additional point: I do remember reading somewhere that in order to be immunised successfully you need to be able to mount a proper immune response to the innoculation. That might not happen until a number of months after the ASCT, as your immunoglobulins are likely to take their time rebuilding themselves. I think a lot of people have their innoculations about six months to a year after the transplant for that reason.
Of course, I might be talking nonsense and you should ask your onc.
Best wishes with you recovery. I had my transplant at the same time of the year as you and I remember trying to walk a little further each day in the snow and slush in Edinburgh a couple of years ago.

Hi David
I had my SCT in December, I also had Half a Swine Flu jab before I went in and was to have the other half when in Hospital, for some strange reason I didn't get the other half :-S and the swine flu never found me ha ha
Am pleased you had your first Dinner, Small it might be great none the less:-D
Now all you need to do is take it easy and you will soon be up and ready.
Tom "Onwards and Upwards"
Eva, you always put me to shame, I have not ventured out into the snow yet.
Well, I say that we had a burst pipe last night. I thought I had switched off the outside water system but it seems the ball tap snapped as I turned it and I had not realized it at the time. The pipes were all in a box on the house wall and independently lagged inside it and the box was lagged. Jack frost got in and bingo, you might say. I found the snapped ball tap and then had to turn off the water maim before I could take it apart, although I still had some water coming out of the tap from the main tank, and put in a plug to seal it all. I was wrapped up like an Eskimo whilst I found the tools and parts needed for the job in my workshop. It took its toll on me though and I did not get up to 1145 today.
However, I am looking forward to getting back "on the road". How far are you going now Eva (give me a target to aim for)
Merry Christmas
David
David – I am so glad you are back home and enjoying all the things that we so take for granted until they are taken away from us. First mission now accomplished.
As for your flu/swine flu injections I really do not know the answer and your consultant is the best person to guide you. I hope he is able to help you.
Good to have you back – you have begun your recovery and hopefully will feel better and stronger each day. Tom's saying is onwards and upwards - mine is one day at a time.
Love, Gaye xx
Hi David,
Well I guess I could walk a couple of miles or even further, now that it's a couple of years post transplant. After a month at home I was able to walk about a mile. My motivation was high because my husband was escorting me to a restaurant for lunch. However, my energy levels didn't ever come back to normal though quality of life is good. Some days I want to have a snooze in the afternoon! Maybe I'm just lazy…..
I've just had a wild day…. I've had to travel from the Highlands of Scotland to Edinburgh on a train. This is a four hour trip, on top of an hour to get to Inverness. Anyway, there was NO HEATING on the train whatsoever and we had to get help to leave the train as the doors had frozen solid. I had made the journey on my own and my feet and hands were so stiff I could barely walk or show my ticket when I arrived. I thought something was wrong when I noticed that people in my carriage were curled up like hedgehogs and they were all wearing hats or hoods and gloves. I should have taken photos!
Best,
Eva
Hi David I hope your doctor has advised you by now , I was told to wait for any vaccinations but as is so often the case each doctor hs their own protocol Eva I too am totally in awe of your stamina Mind you that train journey sounds truly horrendous love Bridget x
Good God Eva, there is just no holding you back woman:-D . I am not sure whether I have a lack of drive to get going or am just enjoying a bit of pampering:-D >:-) . I think it is the latter;-) but don't tell the wife!
kindest regards
David
