Hi from val. I haven’t posted for quite a while as my husband Peter’s treatment took all my time. 12 months of Chemo including 6 sessions sof Radiotherapy. He has been in the Royal Marsden in London, who were brilliant. STC in early December followed by a miserable time with after effects, however he was told in early January that he was in remission which was a strange feeling. It’s pretty hard, when you’re expecting news that isn’t good and have been living with that thought for 18 months but we got used to the idea and i think of you all and hope for the same for you. I have been working all day on travel insurance for him as I am sending him off to Dubai for a few days. I’m not going as we have a new puppy! But I do work for BA so it’s easier. many people have posted after finding great places to find insurance for people like us, but i couldn’t, so have used my BA insurance which will not cover Myeloma but will cover him for any other mishap, just not broken legs or any bones etc Can’t think of any other way. So, if any of those lovely forum members can re-post their findings, that would be great. I did get a good deal but only because of my BA situation. Happy Easter to everyone and I think of you and ourselves every day. Now trying not to think of the future but just forget for a little while to regain our equilibrium as it’s been a long time. With love and thoughts for the future for all of us. keep strong. xxx
I’ve only just joined the forum so apologies if this is too late, but Marks and Spencer will cover myeloma in their travel insurance for one off trips – not annual insurance. Also not sure about countries – I only wanted Europe.
I haven’t had a holiday abroad so can’t advise re travel insurers but will ask the specialist nurse who told me she had a few who had been recommended by other patients.
I wanted to book China now I am in remission (SCT end August 15) but Consultant said not to go anywhere there wasn’t a really good health care system and ideally stay in Europe. I wonder if others have been told the same??
Kind regards
Karen
We use nowicantravel. Very reasonable but we haven’t had to use them on our trips so can’t comment on how good they are.

I have just got Annual Cover from American Express including cover for my post SCT Myelome.
The cost of annual cover wasn’t that much more than for a single trip but with any insurance you only find out if it was a good buy afterwards.

Hi
Just a quick question regarding travel insurance – when faced with the question “have you been given a ‘terminal prognosis’ how do you answer? I was given a terminal prognosis of 5 years when I was first diagnosed and that was over 11 years ago.
Nettie
I wasn’t asked about terminal Prognosis. but I would advise telling them everything up front just in case you need to claim. the way medical costs can mount up you wouldn’t want to give them a get out
Brian
Thank you Brian, I was thinking I should say yes. I was on an insurance comparison site and as soon as I answered that question they said they couldn’t provide me with any quotes so I guess I will try the companies direct.
Nettie
I note that NowIcantravel has been recommended by the Myeloma UK travel guides (and someone on this forum).
What a waste of time, I have spent over an hour today completing all their questions (when the website worked) and at the end of the process ALL my pre existing medical problems, including Myeloma, were excluded from the policy, even minor problems such as Sleep Apnoea. For this they wanted to charge twice as much as a quote from AllClear
Hi Hillbum,
we’ve been using nowicantravel for a few years and have had no trouble with them. We do it over the phone as most insurance websites aren’t geared up to looking at individual circumstances. We just got our insurance through them for a week in Greece that covers all my Myeloma and my wifes diabetes for £58.
When we first started traveling abroad after my diagnosis we we’re quoted over £1000 or refused cover. You have to dig around and unfortunately it’s best to do it by phone and not via the Internet.
Every day is a gift.

Andy, thanks for your reply. I’ll give them another try via the phone, so far I’ve been quoted from £500 to £1980 for an 18 day cruise calling at only EU countries.
it seems that just the word cancer causes an automatic increase in charges, despite consultant report stating “blood tests are consistent with remission”.
Hillbum
Hi
I paid about £200 for annual cover with Amex.
this was for both my wife and myself, and wasn’t their cheapest option
Apart from the Myeloma (which is in remission) I am in good health. I didn’t ask for cruise cover but £1000 seems a lot of money.
Good hunting
Brian
Hi Val,
Not easy finding the right and affordable company.
Having worked in the insurance business many years ago, my advice to all applicants is declare EVERYTHING. Companies will find anyway they can of not paying out, especially if a claim is made linked to a condition, former treatment, medication being taken, that was not mentioned when you made your application.
At the moment I use ‘insurance with’. They state that it is cheaper to apply online but when I did so, at the end of filling in the questionnaire it stated that I would have to speak with an adviser, as some of the conditions that I had mentioned, required further discussion. This mainly referred to the Myeloma and what stage I was at etc etc.
I am 70yrs, having undergone SCT in 2012 but now no longer in remission.
Good luck.
Kind regards,
Steve.
