A quick question. Does anyone take curcumin as its supposed to help fight this disease. Any noticeable side effects? I've just ordered some from an Amazon link as I thought I would be proactive, having just gone through the discomfort of the SCT.

Many thanks

Scott I took it before I started treatment.

I asked my specialist about it and she said it probably wont do any harm but there's no substantial research to suggest it is effective in it's anti-myeloma properties either.

I was also advised to stop taking all supplements during treatment so as not to interfere with the effects of chemo, so I'm not taking curcumin currently. The specialist said they simply don't know enough about possible contradictions with chemo treatment and best to be safe than sorry.

I will be taking it again from around March which will be 9 months post SCT.

Turmeric spice may have role in multiple myeloma therapy

Hybrid compounds formed from structural features of the antinausea agent thalidomide and curcumin, an active ingredient in the common kitchen spice turmeric, destroyed multiple myeloma cells in recent lab experiments.

A team led by Shijun Zhang of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy in Richmond, Virginia, designed the hybrid molecules. According to information in a VCU statement accompanying the release of the findings in Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry (2013;11[29]:4757-4763), laboratory studies have shown that curcumin inhibits the formation of cancer-causing enzymes in rodents. Thalidomide was reintroduced into use in the late 1990s as a treatment for multiple myeloma, after being taken off the market in 1962 because it was found to cause birth defects.

Zhang noted in the VCU statement that thalidomide disturbs the microenvironment of tumor cells in bone marrow but that the drug disintegrates in the body. Curcumin is limited in its anticancer activity by its poor water solubility. However, β€œThe combination of thalidomide and curcumin in the hybrid molecules enhances both the cytotoxicity and solubility,” explained Zhang.

The hybrid compounds exhibited lethal effects on cell models of human multiple myeloma, and the combination of curcumin and thalidomide was significantly more potent than either agent alone. The investigators concluded that the curcumin-and-thalidomide hybrid should be studied further as a treatment for multiple myeloma.

Many thanks for that information. That sounds pretty positive. Another option for us perhaps.

Hi Jo

I got my bloods tested last Monday. Unfortunately the creatinine reading is getting worse. Its up to 335. I'm really really hoping it won't get any higher. I'm back to where I started ie about 20%. What does 385 mean in terms of your kidneys working? Lets hope things get better for you now you are at the end of your treatment.

Hi Scott, Sorry to hear your "rise" have they offered any explanation i.e. there's still a lot of chemo drugs circulating in your body or is it the usual "we don't know what will happen everyone is different"?
When you harvested did the cyclosomething drug they give you start the process adversely affect your kidneys?

Feeling jittery now about proceeding when there's not a lot of kidney to play with. Fingers crossed yours have just taken a temporary battering and will come good especially with the myloema burden gone.
Good luck

Hi Rebecca

I was really worried about the SCT as well due to me poor kidneys. However as I've had this disease for three years now, I was running out of options to keep it under control so I took the chance and went ahead with the SCT. Kings knew about my kidneys and I had a slightly reduced strength chemo infusion. Then they waited a day before the actual transplant and they put me on lots of drips to keep my fluid intake high. I have to go to Kings on Thursday for another blood test so I'll keep you posted re the creatinine readings. With a bit of luck it might stabilise. I really don't want to end up on dialysis on top of everything else!

Thanks Scott, fingers n toes crossed for you.

I would have like to wait for SCT until the velcade stopped working as I feel as fit as a fiddle now and feel I am wasting a remission period as I have started on the 2nd line treatment for 1st line treatment -due to kidneys – limiting my options. But they advise not due to age but they're not the ones that'll be living on dialysis if it goes a bit awry. Can;t believe all I used to worry about was wrinkles!
Pls keep me posted with good news

Is curcumin beneficial only for those with smouldering myeloma ? Can those with active myeloma benefit also? How much should one consume daily? This is very interesting ..
