Hi everyone I have been a bit quiet lately as its a bit of a rough time with one thing or another A while ago my pain levels increased dramatically , mri and bmb ruled out any new myeloma activity and a change in pain relef was suggested as over a long period of time morphine becomes less effective as the liver learns how to process it My macmillan nurse gave me Oxycontin , 12 hour tablets , starting at a fairly low dose. Because of the chaos of ha having kitchen and bathroom fitted I postponed starting on the new tablets until this week The trouble is it just is not working and my pain is back at the level it was when diagnosed. I have to take quite a lot of Severadol during the day as well just to be able to function at a minimal level. I am keeping a note of what I take and how often but another week of this is going to drive me nuts!!Has anyone else tried Oxycontin and found it less effective than morphine mst ? I would be interested to hear what you think Thankyou Hope you are all having a good weekend despite the weather love Bridget x

Hi Bridget it was the 1st drug for his mm he was prescribed by a pain specialist nurse, and he could not get away with it. He prefers mst 10 mg or 20 mg and tramadol combined. He hasn't left his bed all day and hasn't had any…Says if he is not standing up he doesn't need it… Might just tie him to the bed now!!!
Hope you find something that works soon. Have you tried them with a hot drink? work faster.
Low dose is obviously not sufficient by the sound of things partiulary with all that has been happening in your life. Try them again when your in a calmer period.
It is hissing down here but it is race week and its a certain bet it will rain now and during wimbldon Just as well as I have to cut the grass or not if the rain keeps up HE HEE

I wish I had an answer Bridget. Stephen always seems to self medicate (ie takes more than he is prescribed) but it never takes the pain in his back away completely

I do hope that they find a cocktail of drugs to help.

    Hi Bridget

Slims on Oxycontin 30m twice a day morning and evening, also liquid Oxycontin allowed as needed, but if he starts using it all the time doctor will up the pills.but not needed at the moment.

As you know Bridget Slims had a bit of a rough time and can take a lot of pain, the Oxcontin was given in hospital as before Slim was on morphine, but the Oxcontin is a slow release drug has to be taken over a period to have an effect, liquid is for top up.It has worked for Slim.He cannot do much ,walks on sticks for short distance, then wheelchair.also standing causes pain in back, but he can now sleep through the night, and generally he feels better.but I do not think,he could of got much worst pain wise.
Hope this is some help to you Bridget love Eve

Must tell you what happened on Friday

We went to bank to sought out accounts now we are married.Slim on sticks, after five minutes had to sit down further down the bank.Started to remove stickers from his walking sticks, when the man next to him told him to stop doing that,as they had to go back to hospital,Slim told him he would be keeping them, the man said he had been standing there for five minutes and did not need his sticks,Slim reply was what has it got to do with you, when he rounded off on Slim,"I am a tax payer people like you run this country down" I missed all this, and he did not tell me till i got outside the bank.
I can laugh now but by god did my blood pressure go up,he would not let me go back, mind you if i did I would have lost the plot.
Slims worked hard all his life, and served his country for 22 years never claimed a penny he,s not entitled to care allowance and this stupid man thought he had the right to have a go at a man who couldn,t defend himselve and no bank employ stepped in,makes you think what the worlds coming to.LOL
    best wishes Eve

    HELLO Bridget

I am so sorry your pain is so much worse I cannot really comment on pain killers as I can only take paracetamols or have accupuncture.
Could you have some more RT treatment is that possible as it helped a bit for you last time
    Much love Jo x

Hi Eve, Shirley and Jo thanks , you have all made me realise just what a high dose of mst I was on , 90mgs in the morning and 100mgs at night, so I shouldnt be surprised the initial dose of Oxycontin wasnt enough The pain has been awful this weekend so I am going to ring tomorrow and ask them to up the dose or put me back on mst morphine Eve I cant believe the arrogance of the man in the bank !!Who the hell do these people think they are to judge others without knowing them !!GRRRRRR!! My youngest daughter has cystic fibrosis and to look at her you wouldnt know it but the snide remarks from strangers can hurt and like you it makes me so angry .I would probably land a thump on their nose except I would fall over doing it !! As for banks dont start me on them !!Its a good job we can see the funny side of life and will not be beaten by the likes of those idiots though love Bridget x

    Hi Bridget

I too had you on my mind. I do hope and pray that you find something to get this pain under control soon. since I was diagnosed and had op to remove tumour my pain has always been bearable, if limiting, but as others have siad, i have always found using several pain killersw together seems to work best, Do hope they increase your dose or givee you something to add to it.

    Love and prayers.

    Hi Bridget,

I have no idea of the equivalent values of each of the different type of pain-killers… perhaps Ellen could tell us. I assume the MacMillan nurse did and that you simply react better to mst. I was put onto 80mg mst am & pm (160 total) on initial diagnosis of secondary bone cancer, primary unknown, 3 years ago.

My GP went through my meds after my sct and we reduced the mst to 120mg daily and there I've stayed. No one, consultant, lead nurse, GP seems to question the amounts/strengths of any of my meds… perhaps its time I did.

    Dai.

    Hi Everybody

Slim was changed to Oxycontin in hospital, when we asked why, told it was better because it worked longer up to 12 hours,I think they said it was opium based, morphine mst worked faster, but the body gets use to the drug and becomes less effective leading to higher doses.
As for Tramadol Slim was taken off them again by hospital as the were not suitable with some of the tablets he was taking
Oxycontin, works well for the amount he does, but if he was doing things more physical he would have to up the dose.
When he was rushed into hospital,The morphine mst did not touch him when asked pain level said 9,its amazing how much of that stuff he had, just to control pain, which it does for short period,.

hope this is some help eve

Hi Eve thanks for that , I was told its the liver getting used to morphine that leads to higher doses At the moment I am relying on Severadol just to get through the day Hopefully the Macmillan nurse will ring and up the Oxycontin dose soon , if not Iwould rather go back on mst morphine at least Tlcan function better on that Take care love Bridget x
